I am not disputing that we don't have a deer problem. We probably do, it's just i'm not effected by it. But until the city shows me some kind of number of deer we have and how many they plan on taking, this resident just isn't buying it. Some people on here will just have to agree to disagree with me on this issue. But that is the beauty of this web site. That's why i love it!!!!!!!

You need to stop taking pot shots and pointing out only a select few when your thoughts differ from theirs to come back a hour later to say I was only kidding with you. And you think it's okay to let total strangers in the city to hunt deer. That's a crock!!! Wait until they start breaking into our homes. Maybe in the future when you want to discredit someone, leave their names out of it. Don't even bother with the P.M. Save your storage space!!!

Hey Boom, I'm sure glad that the fine people that I stop and ask to hunt out in the county don't have your attitude towards stranger's wanting a place to hunt. I do agree with you on some of the way's the city has handled this open hunting season.

I think the city will get it all lined out,they were ask to do somethin about the deer an they did. No way to please every one,I feel they are doin they right thing by lettin them that want hunt.

Of course you can have your opinion and I can likewise have my opinion disagreeing with your's. I missed the rule which said I was not allow to disagree with a post made on here or mention the poster's name that I was disagreeing with.

 

And honestly, I don't mind that you disagree with the ordinance. I was simply pointing out where I disagreed with your post. Seems someone doesn't mind making posts discrediting our elected officials, but doesn't like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

 

What does bother me is some posters calling the City Council folks complete idiots, etc. particularly posters that don't have the correct information about what the City could and couldn't do. The people who are on Council put in hundreds of hours a year trying to do what is best for our City, basically volunteering their time to try and do what's best for the City. Councilmen/women get a whopping $72 a year and I think the Mayor gets about $300 for their time. And the City, all in all, has been managed very well by them and our administration staff over the years. And its a thankless job. I know. I was on Council for several years. You are not going to satisfy 100% of the people 100% of the time. So even if they got this one wrong, I don't think they should be called idiots, etc.

 

Sorry if you felt I was taking a pot shot at you in the post that you quoted. Wasn't intended to be a pot shot. Just pointing out where I disagreed with you.

 

And no I'm not worried about out of towners coming into the City and hunting with permission, any more than I am worried about some City people hunting on my riverfront property out in the County with permission. . Knowing some of the people most upset about the out of towners, I think some of their criticism is based on the desire to be able to take the big bucks themselves. And they by the way are some of the same people that spend a lot of time hunting in other parts of the state and country. I guess its okay for them to hunt as "out of towners" elsewhere, but they don't want out of towners to hunt in Ft. Thomas. Seems like a double standard to me.

 

As for the accountant comment, fortunately, I'm not an accountant. But I have known some over the years that haven't done the best job. Makes my job a tad bit tougher.

And one final thought. While there definitely is a need to cull the herd for safety issue and herd health reasons, I do agree that the ordinance needs to be looked at. Not to prevent out of towners from being able to hunt. I just think that advance notification to the City should be provided, probably more than the 48 hours that I previously proposed. I think that the City should get 7 days notice and require the notice to come from the property owner giving permission. I think the notice should also provide the name and address of the hunter. I think the City should update this info on its web site so that people concerned with hunting and child safety can be able to check the site to determine when and where people are hunting.

 

And I'd be interested in learning just what lots in the city "fit" within the current ordinance restrictions. If there are a lot of lots that permit hunting in areas that seem to be heavily populated, then the restrictions need to be stronger. Personally I feel the hunting should only be permitted in areas that either are along the river or have lots of woods and not a lot of homes nearby (there are pretty many properties in the City that would fit those limitations). I also think that on certain weekdays, hunters should be permitted to hunt in Highland Park (of course the dates would be publicized in advance and the Park would be closed to the public on those days) to cull the herd there. While I'd prefer it be police officers doing the hunting there, some taxpayers strongly objected to their tax dollars (ie, paying policemen to hunt) be used for that purpose.

For those of you that have some good suggestion's about what the city should do with the over abundance of deer should attend the city council meeting this evening. I went to the last meeting and there wasn't very many people there. I think this meeting will have a little better attendance if you know what I mean.

This is an interesting discussion but I'm rather confused. What is the average size of a Fort Thomas building lot? What is one expected to do with field dressing waste if it can't be disposed of within city limits and what is the thinking behind this rule?

 

Many of the rules seem to be redundent when state laws are considered. No one is allowed to come onto your property and hunt without your permission. Is the "running through our backyards shooting at deer" a real concern? No one is allowed to shoot from, over, or across a road or highway.

 

Surely there must be large wooded areas suitable for hunting where the deer bed by day. While I'm sure deer will feed on lawns and shrubbery, I doubt they bed down in the back yard for more than a few minutes at a time. Limit the hunting to these wooded areas, warn the public when and where it takes place, and it should be very safe.

Is there a safe and cost effective way to remove the deer that would be more acceptable to the FT residents? Maybe there would be a way to handle the situation that would be better for public relations than an open deer hunt, which seems to be having the opposite effect.

 

Could the deer be shot with tranquilizer darts and then euthanized? And then donate the meat to be packaged for hungry Kentuckians through local food banks?

 

That would probably require a lot of cooperation on the part of KDFWR, which they may not be flexible enough to do. Can landowners still get free permits to harvest deer on their own land for property (crop) damage?
