I would think if possible, the harvesting of the deer, if it is extended to next year, should be heavily a doe harvest. That would be the quickest way to bring the herd population down. That would also virtually eliminate the "trophy" hunter mentality and everyone would be on the same page in terms of helping to eliminate this problem.

 

It could be done by application/special permit similar to the way the elk draw hunt is handled. Any hunter wanting permission to hunt must pay a fee and recieve a permit that would specify if it was for a doe only or for a buck or doe. That way the town could recoup some costs or generate a few dollars revenue from the project and they could dictate the harvest much better from a management perspective.

 

I'm not sure what the KDFWR would think about that but being that it is such a small scale, I think they would likely try to accomodate the town's wishes.

You are probably right about that. Frankly I hope some of the more vocal opponents get elected. They'd realize that being on City Council isn't much fun. I know that of any civic duty I've done, I enjoyed being on City Council the least. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad I did it as I felt I was serving my duty; but its no fun constantly being criticized by people that a lot of times have zero appreciation for the facts and limitations of city government. Its a heck of a lot easier to complain about someone else's decisions then being the person making the decision.

They probably felt that way. But they were listened to and have been listened to over the last couple of years that this issue has been debated. Its not that they weren't listened to, its just that City Council disagreed with what they were saying and they didn't like it. And I do agree with you, it is what democracy is all about. If some of the opponents want to run on an anti deer hunting platform, I hope they have at it. Even if I totally disagreed with City Council on this issue, I'd still not vote against the incumbents, as looking at the totality of their actions, they've done a very good job running the City.
