Why sidestep the question? It wasn't about your personal preference or if it mattered to you. And it isn't about public vs private, haves vs have nots, etc.

 

My question was posed in terms of Ky High School Football as a whole and it is a generic question about no class in particular. Speaking hypothetically under those paramaters...

LBBC, what you describe, as far as opportunities is NOT athletic competition to the point that a championship is played. It's dangerously close to T-Ball...everyone gets a participation trophy.

 

Is it great when someone other than the usual suspects make it to the championship? Absolutely! But they need to earn it just like everyone needs to earn it.

 

I personally want to see the best two teams in the state make it to the championship. I definitely think a championship game should be a competitive game. This weekend, there were 4 very competitive games, and 2 stinkers, IMO. Granted, everyone beat who they were supposed to to get there from their side of the bracket. But in 2 classes, either there's a huge disparity on one side of the bracket, or the level of football in various areas of the state is widely disparate.

 

I'm with Watusi...whatever needs to be done should be done in all classes, not just 6A. Honestly, it's changing ONE class to keep both Trinity & X from having the opportunity to meet in the finals. It's not worded that way, but that's what it is, IMO.

Sure would have liked to have seen Lexington Catholic and Bell County meet in the 4-A finals this year. They were ranked alternating one and two all season depending on the poll. Bell was by far the closest challenge Lex faced in this year's playoffs. The regionals and semi-finals would have been more competitive as well. Instead Lex Cath blows out the next two opponents 83-7, I believe. The Bobcats would have loved the opportunity to play Harrison or Lone Oak, or Warren East to earn a spot to play Lex Catholic.

The two best teams in the NFL, Colts and Patriots. They both won't make the Super Bowl this year.

 

Were the Red Sox and the Rockies the two best teams in MLB this past year?

 

Are we guaranteed the two best teams making the championship game in basketball with a blind draw?

 

Argument could be made that Highlands was better than T & X and the two best teams are not making it in the playoffs.

 

Were the Cavaliers and the Spurs the two best teams in the NBA last year?

 

Is Ohio State and LSU the two best teams this year in college football?

 

Do we consider MLB, NFL, NBA, collegiate sports close to participation trophies?

 

And who above didn't earn it this year? Who in the football finals this year or next for that matter didn't/won't earn it?

One of the reasons I like the blind draw in basketball district on up. You don't have one or two schools dominating the region because they have advantages others don't. ESPECIALLY in basketball where there is no classificiation.

Great insight LBBC - where the children would go to school was a point of contention between my wife and I for several years - she went to private catholic schools, I grew up in public schools, and we would have 'discussions' where the kids would go once they started school. Along came KERA, and there was no more discussion, in 1995 we enrolled our oldest child into the local parish school. We were fortunate to have had a choice, and not everybody is that lucky to have an alternative school, but your insight rings true with many families that we know who opted out of the public school systems in the mid 1990s because of the unproven educational reforms.

Yeah you had great football history for many years but something changed in the last 5. As T and X has both been dominating at the same time.

Thanks for the input Poppa. I really believe that what the politicians thrust down the publics' throat had as much to do with the private school explosion than the traditions, the hard work, etc, etc.

 

NOW, that said, if there was an attractive choice, I am sure that you would not have put your child in some rathole of a school.

 

The privates, to their credit, had the traditions, the hard work, etc, etc. making the choice for you REAL easy. Great school with all the opportunities and known of the KERA stuff. Why wouldn't you send your kid there?!?!

Check out post #68. It happens all the time, every year, all over sports. Only in KY, are we trying to set up a system that tries to guarantee which two teams make the championship game.

 

Seems like we should have a lot of BCS supporters among the T and X faithful.
