I'm getting late into this, and maybe misunderstanding your position LBC; but in answer to your question:

 

1. The NCAA tourneys (Baseball, Basketball) all are seeded with the clear goal in mind to have the best teams have the easiest path to a championship game.

 

2. Most softball tourneys I've been in do this as well.

 

3. More tourneys are designed this way than are not.

 

So, your contention in #1 is that George Mason was one of the four best teams in the NCAA last year?

 

The posting on here is about making sure the top two teams make it to the championship game. Tournaments do not produce that, very RARELY, do they produce that. When has the #1 and #2 overall seeds faced each other in the NCAA tournament? That's the supposed two best teams, isn't it?

 

They seed in league softball tournaments? Who determines the seeding? Do we take the AP rankings that were ripped on here? Cantrall ratings? Where would have 5 loss Central, state champion been ranked this past year?

NO...the contention is to ensure that you give it the best opportunity to have the two best teams, if one falls, they fall. George Mason wasn't one of the best, UConn was, and they were seeded accordingly, they got beat. You don't always have to play the devil's advocate. Especially when the basketball tourney is indeed seeded according to that plan.

No, the gist as I have taken it is to make sure there is a chance that the top 2 teams will play for the championship which is what the NCAA has tried to do in seeding the basketball tournament, including now seeding the 1 seeds so that 1 and 2 are on opposite sides of the bracket. That can't happen if the top 2 teams sre on the same side of the bracket.

 

FWIW I agree with the person who said it really doesn't matter to me when a 1/2 game happens, you have to beat everyone to win a championship. I just enjoy it when championship games aren't decided by halftime.

Truth be told, only the AP poll didn't have Central rated as one of the top two teams in 3A. The BGP rankings did, as did the power ratings. It's just that a lot of people chose to ignore that.

I am all for seeding the tournaments and as bad as they are perceived to be, the KHSAA like the NCAA needs to produce the seedings. Let me give an example as to what could happen in 2006. Let's say Manual plays Trinity first round and we have the same result as Ryle with the same injuries. Only now the Rocks play X or Male the second round but Nick Petrino got a broken leg and Will Stein a broken collarbone. Clearly the two best teams were Male and T that year but playing early eliminated one. Seeding puts a greater possibility of 1 vs 2, whatever the division. I think if you don't want to seed all 32 teams then seed the 8 district winners. Actuallly, if I was king, I would drop the low 8 teams out of 6A so 24 qualify for the playoffs with the 8 district winners getting a bye. the 16 runner ups (2nd and 3rd place teams in the district) would play the first round and winners advance to play the second round. So 1 vs 8 could happen third round along with 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. So this year, X would be the 1 seed, Trinity 2, Henry Clay 3, Boone 4, Male 5, Meade Co 6, Scott County 7, and Marshall County 8. Notice that Manual Ballard and PRP are in the pool of 16 and could possibly eliminate the 6th, 7th, or 8th seed if they advance past the first round.

 

Here's another seeding possibility. Ohio has it in their brackets that reseeding can occur at the final four. So let's say it is Boone County vs Meade County and X vs T in the other semi. Give the KHSAA the capabilty to reseed.

In my opinion I think the T v X game this past weekend was the best game from a fan point of view. I understand that some feel it is'nt fair both schools are not on the same side of the bracket because both schools are in Louisville, but this season they were the two best teams in 6A just like years before when they were in 4A. From a fan point of view I want the two best teams to play in the state championship, although it doesn't always work out. This years 4A game is the perfect example Lone Oak was a very good team and a great story but IMHO I felt the 4A state championship was decided when Lex Cath beat bell. For what its worth I would like the format to stay the same.

All Tell got it right. The NCAA clearly sets 1 and 2 on opposite sides of the bracket with the intention of them meeting in the final. Why not do the same with this.True, you may have a 'George Mason' that knocks off the big boys, but you should allow the teams who have the best record the right to reach the finals that they have earned given their records and level of competition. Sorry to say it, but the level of competition in bigger markets (i.e. Lex, Lou, NKY) is greater than that in the smaller ones, much like the NCAA where the SEC, Big East, and ACC have tougher schedules and in-conference opponents than CUSA, WAC, and various others. Case-in-point, this years 4A where an undefeated Lone Oak team with a record setting QB falls to a tough LexCath team. Not to say the teams from outside of big cities dont have a shot, but more often than not big city teams have regular season opponents that adequately prepare them for the playoffs and the rest of the state.:thumb:
