I've been in this field for sometime and I've never heard of this. Here are a few things I know. If a kidney has quit fuctioning and isn't causing any health problems then they just leave it alone. If it does poise a health risk then they may decide to remove it. I'm thinking they are going to do a bio of the kidney to see if it has abnormal cells. I'm almost sure they will use a needle to do so. I hope it all turns out to be negitive harmful cells.

He does have a recent cancer history; but to my knowledge, that isn't suspected. His kidney function has been insuficient since the heart attack. That's all I can tell you.

 

Also, they may leave non-functioning kidney's in some cases. However, when I went into kidney failure, my nephrologist was seriously considering removal of my only kidney. That didn't turn out to be necessary in the end. Thank God for...himself.

I have heard of a lot of things, however, this is not one of them. Tell RM that PH and I are so very sorry and we will send a prayer for her and her dad and family.

PH has a stint in his kidney and his one kidney is very VERY large which they are watching out for, however, they have never metioned shaving it or anything....in fact, his doctor said there really is not much you can do for the kidney....hmmmmmm.

The radiation....I had asked him if we could cut down the size of the kidney and do something else more....Don't worry, we are thinking of Vandy....There has to be something.

Now I'm confused. A "shave biopsy" is usually performed on the outer layer of skin. If he is getting a kidney biopsy, it usually involves inserting a needle into the kidney to remove renal tissue for examination. There's no "shaving" involved in any type of renal surgery that I'm aware of. Then again, I'm not a urologist.

As far as she knows, this isn't a biopsy. It's a trimming procedure of some kind.

After the last 3 months I've had with my Mom I would have thought that I have heard of it all but this is one thing they didn't mention (thank goodness). I am surprised that they haven't started him on dialysis to see if they could kick start his kidney's back to working but perhaps that's not an option. I wonder what his blood work results (dealing with his kidney's) are? RockMom, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. She said she's learned her lesson for listening to a man.

 

The good news is that he's feeling better now, and seems to be in better spirits. I know she appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers very much...and all your help with figuring out what "kidney trimming" was all about.
