How close is JC's turf to Belfry's turf?

Same product, FieldTurf. Belfry's infill may be a little more compact than JC's because JC's is newer, but I don't think you'd notice any difference in playing on it.

The thing that is most interesting about some Belfry fans is that they truly forget what they have in Belfry. They have arguably THE BEST 3A team in KY. The key to this is the 3A part. Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for Belfry and the incredible tradition of that program, but I seem to sense that the fans are looking at JC as the JC of old, the JC of 10 or 20 years ago. This is not the JC of yesteryear.

 

This school and this program have started to understand that they are a 5A school and they are building a 5A program. I'm a Lawrence County fan, so trust me it hurts to give JC any credit for what they are building, but the fact is that Matney is building a program that very few Eastern Ky teams are going to have a chance against in the coming years. They are going to not just compete with the Belfry program, but they should start to consistently outclass them. By outclass them I mean that by having a much larger pool of athletes to choose from they should be consistently bigger, stronger, faster and therefore a better team. Obviously the large pool of athletes doesn't matter unless they have the coaching, but they DO have the proper coach now.

 

So in conclusion, I would just like to say that while watching Belfry's running game will always be one of my favorite things to do, I for one will not be surprised to see the JC team start to dominate nearly all of the Eastern KY competition.

They will still schedule you and they will still walk right onto your field with the idea that if you think your better then you have to prove it on the field. They never give up and they NEVER back down.

If Belfry beats JC they should win the 3A championship and I will say I'm sorry for saying what I feel will happen come Friday. If we made it that far my job is to take care of MAY thats my only job and I promise I will do that if we made it that far and if we dont I wish Belfry all the luck in the world.

The only complaint I have is if you look at your true Belfry posters on this site, you will find the majority have openly said that JC should be the favorite in this game. If this was the JC team of yester-year then it would be a landlside decision that Belfry would be the favorite, I am pretty sure the Pirates have never lost to a JC team.

 

The JC program is the epitome of how to turn a program around. What has happened in Paintsville over the past five years has been the byproduct of smart moves by the administration, the effects of an excellent coach, an example of what happens when a community embraces a program, and the culmination of a feeder system that has long underachieved at the HS level after being a force at the grassroots level. Not only has a winless team went to the State Semi-finals, they have installed a beautiful new complex, instilled a radio talk show, adopted their own identity as a fan base, and became one of the state's top buzzword programs. I have always admired Jim Matney's coaching abilities (although some of his tendacies entertain me such as his inordinate ability to always turn his team into the underdog), but my respect has grown ten fold for seeing how he has taken ownership of this program and literally made a contender out of nothing.

 

For all these schools around the state who wonder to themselves, "We have the enrollment and the athletes, why can't we field a top notch football team?" I simply say, copy Johnson Central... a great coach can't make a program winner, but he can sure put them where they need to be to make that step to get over the hump.

This is a wonderful post on what Coach Matney and his staff have done to make this program what it is today. With all the athletes at JC it was just a matter of time before they took off. All it took was finding the right coach, the right staff, and the right support to build a program at JC. It has been said for many years that JC was a sleeping GIANT! Coach Matney and his staff have this program on the right track. They have taken this program miles from what it was, but believe me, JC has miles to go to get where they want to go. It will happen, that I can assure you.
