Now for my prediction...

I have seen both Belfry and JC play. Belfry looked to be a bigger team as far as size goes. JC looked to be overall faster and had more depth than Belfry. Belfry's and JC's running back's have different styles. Belfry tends to run over the defense and JC tends to out-run defense's. I dont look for many passes in this game and this game should go by rather quickly. Both teams have a good defense and good coaching. In the end, JC has to many skill players and needs a good win to get this investigation off of everybody's mind.

First and foremost, on behalf of the rest of the Piratefans I want to welcome all those Eagle fans, and impartial observers who will be coming to CAM Stadium tomoorw night!

 

Directions to the Stadium/School: Assuming you are coming in on US 119 North via Pikeville, eventually 119 will have a very sharp curve and speed zone drop at a Speedway Station, immediately ahead will be the old school (now Belfry Middle), continue on US 119 for approximately 2 miles, you will turn right at the second red light just before a BP Station. For those cominign via Inez on US 52/119. After crossing over the Kentucky border at Williamson, WV, proceed on US 119 approximately 2.5 miles. Once you pass the Wal-Mart you will see the Stadium on your left.

 

Parking: A large ammount of parking is available at the school, but this game will be packed. A good rule of thumb is, if you see cars parked alongside the road, then the school parking is probably full. You can then park alongside the road yourself, or at one of the local businesses (Community Trust bank, US Bank, etc)

 

Tailgating: Tailgating is a welcome art at BHS, the Pirate faithful henerally stick to one BIG tailgate between the baseballa nd softball fields. If you want to indiivdually have your own, that is perfectly fine, just be respectful of the parking situation though and clean up afterwards.

 

Radio: WSIP 98.9 (The Eagle's home station) can be picked up fairly easy. WXCC 96.5 will also be broadcastign the game. I really like WSIP, but WXCC is a EKY Broadcasting Station, so they try their hardest to be very fair and unbiased. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I figure the WXCC crew will be a duo made up from either Andrew Joyce, Bobby Norman, and Joe Kinzer. If Joyce/Norman call the game you will be hard pressed to find a better duo in EKY.

 

Weather: Looking like a beautiful day, with sunny skies and high's in the 60's. By gametime it will be a very pretty night, but very cold. Dress accordingly, expected lows in the upper 30's.

 

 

Facilities: Belfry has ample visitor seating (I have only seen it full twice), but I fully expect to see the largest visiting crowd to date. The Bleachers are metal so I'd advise bringing a blanket/seat to sit on, and arriving fairly early so you cana ssure yourself a seat. There will be no extra seats available on the Belfry sideline. CAM is completely handicap accessible if needed. On the main concourse of the Home Side there are specifically designed seats so that wheelchair bound fans cna watch the game, and directly beside them a bleacher is installed so their accompanying family can join them. For those handicapped preferring to sit on the JC sideline, you will want to enter the stadium from the entrance as you come up the Hill beside the Pirate lockerroom.

 

Their are a couple notable rules about CAM Stadium. 1. NO UMBRELLAS ALLOWED (won't need it with the forecast as it is) 2. No SMOKING INSIDE THE STADIUM

 

In terms of facilities, I don't expect the stadium to overhwlem the JC faithful like other teams who have came in. We have a FieldTurf field, two seperate lockerrooms on site. The Eagle locker room will be located directly below the concession stand/restroom facility on the scoreboard side of the stadium. Belfry ahs playclocks at the back of each endzone and a well lit scoreboard.

 

We take alot of pride in our Stadium, and as you enter you will be given a plastic bag so as to put your trash in to make throwing it away easier. Typically, the Stadium is cleaned by volunteers and student organizations as a way for those organizations to amke additional money. Please make their life easier and throw away what trash you have.

 

Restaraunts: For those looking for a bite to eat before the stadium you have quite a few choices within 2 miles of the school. Atop of the mall (next red light after the field) you have Captain D's, Arby's, McDonald's, Throughbred Steakhouse, Giovanni's Pizza, Quizno's, and inside the mall Peking. Other nearby restaraunts (all directly accesible by 119) are Hardee's, Subway, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Wendy's, Taco Bell, KFC, and Long John's. In downtown Williamson, there is Starter's Sports Bar as well.

 

Gas: As of this morning gass was 12 cents cheaper to fill up on at the Food City/Wal-Mart pumps at Pikeville, than any place over towards Belfry. If you don't mind payign alittle mroe or just want a cup of coffee, there are several doubl kwiks and a Marathon/7-11 along the way.

 

Please have a safe trip. They are still finishing roadwork on US 119 between Belfry and Pikeville,so be aware of lane shifts. That stretch of 119 is also heavily patrolled by State Police, so keep your speed in check as well.

Now, time for me to man up and hit on what I feel are soem of the keys to the game, and also justify my prediction of JC winning. In honor of tailgating, this weeks keys to the game are all food related:

 

BELFRY

1. Feast or Famine Special Teams- It may seem nitpicky to be worried about the Pirate special teams, I mean, this is a unit who have returned 5-6 kicks for TD's the past 4 weeks, a kicker who is ultra consistent and has range up to 52 yards on his field goals *he has already hit a 50 yarder this year. But for as good as the BHS special teams have looked, there are tims they have looked equally as bad. The Pirates have struggled in kick coverage and allowed quite a few long returns, the Pirates have punted a handful of times, but it seems every third snap is a bad one. In close games, special teams can ultimately be the deviding line of who wins and loses (see UK vs. Florida).

 

2. Offense = Triple Thick, Chocolate Milkshake-This ahs two meanings, first the "Triple Tick" refers to the consistency of the offense. The Pirates have to execute throughout, no costly penalties, hold on to the ball, and not make mistakes with assignments. The "chocolate" menas that the playcalling simply can't be "vanilla". Belfry cannot defeat a Jim Matney coached team using only the belly series, the Pirates have to work the field from the inside out, and must keep the Eagles honest passing.

 

3. Be Like a Jalapeno- All idnications is that matney will ahev the Eagles fired upw itha chip on their shoulder, and playing on lots of emotion. The Pirates not only need to come out very intense and fired up, but they have to be able to sustain it for long periods of time. The momentum will ebb and flow, the key is to keep focused and let the playoff atmosphere feed the kids having fun out there.

 

JOHNSON CENTRAL

 

1. Force Belfry to be Medium rare, Not Well Done- This pertains to shooting into the backfield and busting plays before Belfry can execute. If JC allows Elkins to carry out his playfakes and go throught his progressions they will be in alot of toruble. The teams who have beat belfry over the past seasons have all done it the same way, by forcing Belfry's hand and causing disruption that eventually lead to turnovers.

 

2. 3rd Down = Foot Long Hot Dog, Not Ball Park Frank- In other words, the Eagles chances will exponentially improve if Belfry faces 3rd Down and 5+ instead of 3rd and 3-. Belfry runs like a fine oiled machine when they face 3rd and short... but on 3rd and long they become a lot more predicatable, and more options become negated. The Pirates hae good passing capablitilies, but if the Pirates attempt 10+ passes the Eagles have a really good chance of winning this game.

 

3. Improve Your Menu- The Eagles have got to show Belfry looks they ahve't seen this year. If they rely solely on pounding up the middle, the Pirate's defense will be much too quick. If they rely solely on misdirection and getting outside, then you play right into Belfry's strength on defense (excellent LB play and DE's). The Eagles have to mix up their playcalling and throw wrinkles that the Pirate's haven't seen on game tape.

 

 

PREDICTION:

No way both teams score over 30 points.... no way! Aside from last week, the Eagle defense has been excellent against the run, and rest assured that defense will look to amke a statement after their struggles last week. Addiitonally, Belfry's defense is veteran, quick, and well suited for the Eagle running game. Both teams have enough playmakers that they will move the ball, but poitns will be earned and not given in this one. Additionally, that clock will move evry fast, thus maximizing the significance of each posession.

 

If this were Week 1, I would have taken JC by 3 TD's, JC definately enjoys the luxuries of being a larger school (more depth specifically), and they are right now beginning to meet their potential. Belfry hasn't seen overall team speed like JC all season, and JC's defensove front has the size to match up with Belfry's huge line. To me, this game is truly a tossup, but I expect a seasoned JC team to play their best game of the season, whereas Belfry's alck of competition to this point will hinder them from firing on all cylinders as they have weaknesses exposed that they haven't seen yet this season.

 

A loss really wouldn't be all that bad to be honest, I feel Haywood added this game to br direct replacement for Ironton, and thus it will turn out similar to the games in those series.

With no disrespect to Johnson Central, they have finally gotten the taste of power and domination in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky like the Pirates have had for so long now that they want a piece of that pie and are willing to come into CAM Stadium tomorrow night and try to dethrone Belfry. Could it happen? Sure it's a possibility, but will it happen I really don't think so.

 

Since the start of the season the state has questioned just how good this Belfry team is and if they really are worthy of their 1st place ranking in 3A. This game really doesn't mean much for either team except for a 9-1 season going into the playoffs for Central or a 10-0 season for the Pirates, depends on the victor of the game.

 

This game is about respect and it gives Belfry the chance to quiet the nonbelievers in the mountains and across the the state of what this team really is made of.

 

This game will be a battle. Belfry will bring it's 3 yards and a cloud of turf while Central will try to outrun the stingy Pirate D. Again don't get me wrong Central is tough but they have not faced such a powerful grind it out Offense like that of the Pirates this season and by far this will be the toughest D that Grimm and company have seen, and with the subpar showing that the Belfry D had last week at East Carter I'm sure that the Big Red D will come out and show what they can really do, especially against a team of equal talent.

 

So after an amaizing display of heart, power and respect I feel that Coach Haywood and his Belfry Pirates walk into the first round of the 3A playoffs underfeated and turning heads once again as the Angry Red Nation get one step closer to another trip to the Pizza Box and a possible 3rd Championship in 5 years.

Wheelersburg, OH might have something to say about that. Dont get me wrong, I know that the Belfry D is physical, but I dont believe they posses the overall team speed and toughness that Wheelersburg showed JC. I took JC 2 solid weeks to get healed over that game. I hope it doesnt take JC that long this time around.

I think the key for Belfry will be to stop JC's skill players from making big plays. If Grimm (or someone else) gets out into the open, I don't feel Belfry has anyone who can close.

At JCs last game was the first time ive seen the Air Force offense run since Matney was at Sheldon Clark ,with the two wings and one in motion really gets the blocking to the outside .I was very impressed with JCs O-LINE timing and quickness (imo)the heart of this offense.I have not seen Belfry play ,sounds like one of their better teams .JCs def. against the inside running game of Belfry wins this game:thumb:Good luck to both teams.
