October 17, 200718 yr Funny enough, I suggested back in the summer that the Reds go after a name manager when they fired Narron. I think I mentioned Baker, Girardi, and maybe Larry Bowa. Personally, I don't think Baker is the right fit for the Reds. He would be better taking the Yankees job or the Cardinals job. However, two things stick out to me. #1, maybe the Reds think he is the guy to light a fire under Dunn which sends him into the "SuperStar" status of MLB. Narron and Miley weren't that guy. He also understands veterans, which may be what Griffey needs. He give Griffey his room. He did the same with Bonds and Sosa. #2, Dusty is back working with Dick Pole as his pitching coach. Pole was with him in SF and with him on the bench in Chicago, although Rothschild was the pitching coach. They obviously know how to get along. Arroyo, Harang, Bailey and whoever had better get used to throwing 110 pitches a game. If he doesn't trust the pen, he won't use it unlike Narron trotting out Coffey every other day. The Brennemans had better keep plenty of erasers in the booth because Baker is the king of the double-switch. I think he switched a groomsman and an usher on his wedding day and hasn't stopped since. Baker is a winner. Won with the Dodgers as a player. Won with the Giants. Won with the Cubs. As a manager, he wins quick. I'll be the first to say the Reds will challenge for the NL Central next year. But the drop-off is quick and his teams head south in a hurry. And he likes to point fingers. In SF, it was Jeff Kent. In Chicago, it was Sosa and Steve Stone. When the finger-pointing starts, the nose dive follows quickly. His comments to the effect of "I need to win and I need to be in the ticker-tape parade" seemed odd to me. When was the last time a new manager addressed team goals using first person? He'll get a bump in payroll and the bullpen will be the first priority. I'm also curious to see who his man-crush will be in Cincinnati. It was Armando Rios in SF. Neifi Perez in Chicago. Juan Castro? Ryan Freel?
