No, he got one in muzzleloader season though!

You cannot have 15 kids on a team that plays 25 to 40 games per year. The more games the kids sit, the more upset parents become.

The coach needs to make the tough choices and cut the roster to 9 or 10 to be fair to the best 9 or 10.

You need 10 to be able to scrimmage in practice... unless multiple teams practice at the same time I'd say 12 is the right number.. and 11 and 12 need to be good kids who are low maintenance, work hard, and make good grades OR be the akward tall kid who you keep around to practice hoping his coordination will someday catch up with his body.

IMO 10 max if you truly care about getting PT for all of the kids.

Is that really supposed to be the #1 concern of the coach? If one turns an ankle during the season then he can't scrimmage so it hurts the team. If the kids want guaranteed playing time - there are Upward leagues in almost every town now. There is some value in making kids EARN playing time... imo.

If you can't figure out a way to get 10 kids into a game (not equally) then you're not doing your job as a middle school b-ball coach. I don't keep kids that can't help me and that cannot compete. They all play .

I can't stand coaches that play one or two kids off the bench. Its got to be a balance between development and winning. We're trying to get these boys ready for high school basketball and playing 7 guys when the game is still tight is NOT preparing the boys.

If winning is a coach's focus, coach AAU.

I'm with you on the bold. I'm with you if you only want to keep 10 if that's all that can help the team. I'm not with you that you only keep 10 to keep the parents happy... Coaches who make decisions to keep the parents happy are asking for trouble.

Nothing about keeping 10 is designed to keep parents happy. Its simply a byproduct.

Plato, I know your the greatest philosopher of all times. You know, their is no way any one can keep parents happy. Expcially when its comes to coaching their childen in sports.

15 is entirely too many. Its a no-win situation. If you're going to have 15, keep 3 more and make 2 teams like CC does. 10 is a struggle for a coach. 15 is going to be a wasted year for about 6 boys OR the coach is going to hear complaints about the best players not getting enough PT.

Poor decision.

I agree with you brother. But the orders come from above if you know what I mean. The coach feels the same way, he thinks why not keep a few 6th graders, throw them in the mix and have 2 teams. Very tough to do when you have a middle school that doesnt even feild a 6th grade team. Thats a whole other topic.

The 15 kids is good for scrimmaging in practice and keep in mind, 2 of them are 6th graders who are there for the experience. There are probably 3-4 kids that wont get a lot of playing time but they will still be there for practice working hard and developing their game. I think the parents understand as well that its better for them to be practicing everyday and be part of the team instead of cut and not part of the team. There will be 8-9 who play a lot, this is a very talented class so it could even be 10 kids that rotate a ton. And the other 3-5 kids I know are going to be playing AAU ball on the weekends so it actually will work out for everyone. Will a couple kids get discouraged over playing time, probably but they have to look at the long term and not the short term.

Middle school ball is for developing their skills and not so much winning championships and that is why they keep so many. There could be a late bloomer in the group who practices hard and cracks the starting lineup late in the season.

I told my son if he isnt going 100% full speed in practice everyday he is vulnerable to moving one notch down on the depth chart. That goes for all the boys. You practice how you play and some of the kids are going to learn this lesson very quickly.

There's no 6th grade team? Wow.

I admit that I sometimes forget that not all schools have the same mentality. Our school has about 35 basketball teams playing each year - girls and boys - 3rd through 8th. If they don't make the A team in 7th or 8th, they play on B teams and still play good competition.

Fort Thomas is ressurecting their youth league and having school teams play against each other and this is for grades 1-3. Grades 4-6th are pretty much on their own to form a school team and find a league which is what they have done in the past. Both boys and girls. With the re-formation of this all Fort Thomas league for the grades 1-3 they are taking babysteps to get it back off the ground and get these kids playing earlier and developing fundamentals. I have a group of 1st graders from Johnson school, about 8 that I am going to start working with this week. They will play the other two grade schools in Ft. thomas in a league starting in dEcember.

The fact that they dont have a 6th grade team is the real embarrassment. The 6th grade is part of the middle school and could simply play their games prior to the 7th/8th grade games. There are enough 6th grade teams acros NKY that they could field a team. Their excuse is that they dont want the kids to have to be cut from a team and that the funds are not there. So the kids who love basketball and want to play all come out for the 7th grade team and experience getting cut anyway, I dont get it. A few they kept and another two boys that they are calling Walk ONs who help in practice and are working on their game but wont dress unless someone gets booted or quits.

Gotta remember, Ft. Thomas is a football town, trying to convince them on Basketball is not very easy.

Scott County Middle schools do not have any 6th grade teams either.

They do keep some 6th graders on the 7th grade team also.

Some school leagues have by-laws that require 20 players before there can be two teams, 30 before 3 teams etc. (With 10 on each team). They do not make it any less than that because there is only X amount of gym time to play X number of games.

That means if you have 18 kids from a school then you have 18 kids on one team. Before you say the 18 should be cut to 10 some schools have by-laws that no kids can be cut from a school team.

One friend had 15 girls on a team one season and then had 18 on the team the next season.

There are only 2 teams in the NKMSBL that don't have 6th grade teams.

BTW Back in the day, Ft Thomas was also a basketball town. :thumb:
