Why do you cheer for the teams you do?

Featured Replies

HSSB had a pretty cool story about why he is a Nebraska fan, so why do you root for your team? For me, I bleed blue... born and raised that way.

Born in Alabama, was taught at a young age that "We like Alabama, Alabama is good. Auburn is bad, we don't like them."

I like watching teams like Michigan, Ohio St., USC, West Virginia, Louisville, Kentucky, Florida, LSU etc..... BECAUSE they play good football. ( It is understood that the general audience knows UM is a good football, traditionally...) Why cant a fan appreciate all / most of the teams that exhibit fundamental offense and defense??? I used to be all UK Blue (15 years ago) Ive learned that there are others that play the game with passion and provide a fun, entertaining product that ultimatly deserves respect from the sports world.

I enjoy Saturdays regardless of who wins or looses......

Grew up in a suburb of Baltimore, MD. Rooted for Navy (I was old enough at the time to know who Roger Staubach was), the University of Maryland and Penn State.

Now I'm more of a casual fan; don't root real strongly for or against anyone. I just like to watch a good game.

Born in Kentucky to two UK alums (one of which played basketball at UK), tought from an early age that UK was THE team to cheer for, and that schools like UL and UT were evil and to be despised (not really what I was tought, but it kind of evolved that way). We have always had season tickets to UK football games (born in July and was at the first September home game, haha) and we watched every UK game we could on TV. Plus there is being from Eastern Kentucky, where it seems like 99% of people are UK fans.

Raised just outside of Cincinnati, thus an OSU, Bengal, and Reds fan. Growing up was a big UC basketball fan (season tickets), but learned to hate them during the Huggins era. Became a UK fan after moving to Kentucky while attending college back in 1981. I also cheer for the Red Sox as an American League team since the 1975 World Series, My NFC team is the Bucs, but I cannot tell you why.

I was born into U.K. basketball and I also am a U.K. anything fan. I have always liked Ohio State Football and within the last couple of years my h.s. alma mater has had Aaron Pettry sign with the Buckeyes as a kicker. Pettry held/holds state records in Ky. h.s. football for kicking (fg's) and a couple of passing stats(comp. %) as a qb while at Raceland.

I was a huge fan of Bear Bryant at Bama football and all of their tradition as well as UGA , Herschel; Walker, V. Dooley and company and all of their football history.

That is how it goes for football. Basketball is cut and dried - U.K. and NO ONE else.

ND is the other football team I root for. When you're a young Catholic boy in the day of no cable and while getting ready for church on Sunday you watch Lindsay Nelson call the ND game replay, you become an ND fan.

First game I remember watching was "The Game". Followed the Cats from there on out. Now a UK alum.

Me too. I remember my favorite player being Tommy Clements:thumb:

I root for the Washington Huskies. I have relatives in the Seattle area, and got to attend one of their games at Husky stadium. Great venue and atmosphere.

Born and raised to be a UK fan. Everyone in my dad's family is a UK fan (he's from Mt. Sterling, 30 minutes outside of Lexington). My mom's parents were pretty big Wildcat fans as well. So that's how that one goes.

Football wise I'm more of a Florida State fan. That comes from seeing them play on TV for the first time when I was 8. The Seminole rode out to midfield and planted his spear in the turf, and I was hooked.

I root for the crimson and cream Sooners of Oklahoma. I watched them back in 2000 when they would be that seasons national champs. Watching that game when they beat Florida State was (for me), extremely fun to watch. Ive been a fan ever since.

Then came along this guy named Adrian Peterson..his presence basically added more excitement to each game.

Well I grew up a UK fan in basketball and football. Although I never really got into it until I was about 11-12. This whole time of course, having gone to Catholic schools and having been raised Catholic I was looking forward to the day I would attend Trinity as well. Anyway my mother is die-hard UL basketball, kind of scary the extent to which she takes it, but she has always been a UK

Anyway when Brohm decided to attend UL I couldn’t bring myself to cheer against the kid so I became a UL fan football wise. Although I admit that during this time I have found myself becoming more of a UL fan overall especially since I love the city and hearing the overall arrogance of many fans of the SEC (and UK fans) has made me somewhat question whether I want to identify myself as pulling for the Cats, especially when I grew up in a house where both teams were favorites. Ergo, I never understood how a rational Kentuckian could pull against a school when not playing another KY school. Not to say some UL fans don’t have the same attitude, but I have been exposed to far more of the other side of the coin thus my experience.

Of course I have also gotten to the point over the last few years where I find basketball to be an annoyance until after football season has ended (HS, NCAA and NFL). So while I still find it easier to pull for the Cats in basketball than the Cards, just out of habit, it matters little to me until after the Superbowl.

I am also a fan of the Fighting Irish. Catholic schools all the way through college builds some loyalty. :thumb:

In the couple of parts I have highlighted in your post you have just descibed Exactly the way I feel in reverse about U.L. fans and their arrogance, that is precisely the reason that I could never pull for U.L. anything. Aside from the teams that I have mentioned in my earlier post my favorite is whoever may be playing U.L. on a given day or night in any sport. ;)

You have your view of it and I have mine and that is o.k. by me :thumb:
