If I were in Pearl Jam's shoes though, I would be livid and would be sure to never allow AT&T to profit from my music again. I'd also use the band's popularity and fame to boycott the company.

Out of curiosity, how many BGPers are old enough to remember CSN&Y (Ohio), Marvin Gaye (What's Going On), Edwin Starr (War), Buffalo Springfield (For What It's Worth), Dylan (Masters of War), CCR (Fortunate Son), Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction), etc. etc. etc.?

 

Seems to me that we're a lot thinner-skinned in terms of permitting differing points of view to be heard than we used to be. However, I don't listen to a lot of new music, so maybe there are just as many "protest songs" as there were 35 or 40 years ago.

It always amuses me that people don't want their entertainers to "preach" to them...yet some of the biggest names, historically, are entertainers who used their art to attempt to influence events. Even some names you didn't mention, try to bring to the forefront problems in our society...Springsteen, U2, Mellencamp.

These guys are always trying to give the alusion that they are persecuted. It really is silly. The government is not in any way censoring them. I don't think anybody at a Pearl Jam concert has any doubt of Vedder's feelings towards President Bush. When they sign up with corporate partner's they forget that they are working for these corportations. These corporations make their money by selling their products to Republicans, Democrats, Independents, etc...
