Locally, call it what you want.

 

Nationally, the pronounciation has been established because of the Baseball Bat.

 

Nobody, outside of Kentucky, calls it a "Louavull Slugger".

 

It's ALWAYS called a "Looeyville Slugger".

 

That's 49 states versus 1 state.

It's our city so we call it as we want...just like nobody can tell anyone how to pronounce their own name.

I've never heard anybody say it that way...Outside of Kentucky the majority probably say Looeyville, but I've heard many say it the correct way, Looavull.

I have heard lewisville a bunch of times.

Lived on S. Preston, a rocks throw from the hood and it's Looavull. Of course I've heard Mr. Ali call it Looeyville when addressing the national media, perhaps he pronounced it that way to avoid the explanation.

By the way,,,,the most irritating mis-pronunciation of the word, at least IMO, is when Billy Packer says Louie-ville. Man, it really rakes on my nerves when he says it. I can't stand that guy!:mad:

I've also heard natives pronounce it "Looeyvull". Listening to games from WHAS, the announcer also says "Looeyvull".

 

Many of the announcers and newscasters do say Looeyville (or 'vull'), probably on purpose.

When I lived in Georgia and people asked me where I was from, any time I said Lou-a-vull I always received a confused look, then if I followed that by saying Looey-ville they would start nodding there heads and say OK.

 

What I found more funny was when people from out of the state tried to mimick our pronounciation of it. Usually it ended up sounding like Lou-ville, but they thought they were saying it right and just not quite getting it.

Another funny thing I remember hearing was listening to national sportscaster, I can't remember who, but he started going into a rant sometime around the Louisville-Rutgers game. "When did become Looey-vull, its always been Looey-vill" he was very fustrated, I found it comical.

There is a city in Colorado with the exact same spelling and it is pronounced Lewis-Ville.

 

My entire family lives there, both parents were born and raised there, and I've always pronounced it with two syllables: LullVul. I voted the closest option.

 

By the way, how many people have been saying each of the options out loud and have people stopping outside your office looking at you like your crazy? Oh...just me....super.

I accidently clicked lewisville but I pronouce it Looavull.

Louisville is famous for the bats and Ali. Ali says Louie, the bat is the Louie, so i say Louie :thumb:

It is like New Orleans some say Naalens, some say Narlens, some say New Orleans. I say Looavuhl at home or in the area, or Looeyville when I am out of town, I think Ali does the same thing because I met him a few times and when he was in Louisville and in Frankfort he said it right but on TV he says Looeyville. Remember his nickname was pronounced the Looeyville lip by media not from here, he probably pronounced it on tv because of that.

Bottom line is we live here, when call it what we want. I think Looavuhl is what most us natives say.
