June 5, 200719 yr I just read a book , and I don't remember the exact results, but an economics professor showed that the theory of "protection" does not hold up under statistical analysis. I read an article about it too. It actually went against protection helping. The guy was from MIT or somewhere similar.
June 5, 200719 yr A lot of teams "best hitters" knock in 90-100 runs no matter who hits behind them. As for the protection issue: Berkman before this year did. Aramis Ramirez did last year. Jason Bay did too I think. Carlos Lee did while in Milwaukee last year. If you consider an injured Rolen or a rapidly declining Edmonds protection we can leave Pujols off the list. Do you want me to start on other divisions? Pujols, Lee, Berkman, Ramirez pretty good players if you ask me. Would you trade any one of them for Lidge?
June 5, 200719 yr Ok that doesn't ever matter because he puts up very good numbers without it. No one will answer me how many guys put up the numbers Dunn does year in and year out. All of the best hitters on the other teams in his division.
June 5, 200719 yr Ok that doesn't ever matter because he puts up very good numbers without it. No one will answer me how many guys put up the numbers Dunn does year in and year out. 1. To answer your question, hardly any. 2. #1 is somewhat meaningless if he's not backing it up with clutch hitting(unless you're his agent negotiating his next contract).
June 5, 200719 yr Pujols, Lee, Berkman, Ramirez pretty good players if you ask me. Would you trade any one of them for Lidge? Depends on what my team needed, but probably not. Plus, all those guys are a level or two above Dunn, IMO.
June 5, 200719 yr Ok but how many guys in this league Drive in 100, Score 100 and walk 100 times and hit 40 HRs? Not many. Is Lidge really worth that in your eyes? If he some more portection we wouldn't be talking about how much he strikes out. Bingo. And Lidge would be making at least 12 million by then. He's only on a 1 year contract now...
June 5, 200719 yr Depends on what my team needed, but probably not. Plus, all those guys are a level or two above Dunn, IMO. I agree they are but (Minus Ramirez) its close thats the point and on this team we can't afford to lose a guy like that.
June 5, 200719 yr Pujols, Lee, Berkman, Ramirez pretty good players if you ask me. Would you trade any one of them for Lidge? That wasn't your original question. You get an answer you don't like and ask a new question. You're missing his point about money both now and up coming contracts for Dunn. Dunn is a very good player and is valuable to the Reds as a run producer. Some of us think a good closer who will cost $7M less would be just as valuable to the team now and in the future.
June 5, 200719 yr Bingo. And Lidge would be making at least 12 million by then. He's only on a 1 year contract now... I don't think a "middle reliever" will be making $12M a year.

If Lidge pans out as the closer he is making more than 7M. It doesn't matter that it's not my original question I'm supporting my argument.
