June 5, 200719 yr I just bought tickets for Saturday Night. Go get em Homer!! :dancingpa Is it 100% that he is pitching Saturday?
June 5, 200719 yr The thinking that there is a hard date that decides if he's eligible one year quicker is a fallacy. If that is a priority for the Reds, keep him down the entire season just to make sure. How will the Reds know if he will be in the "top 17% of all 2 year players in service time?" They won't so waiting one more month will have zero impact on the decision in one month. THAT is how I'm so decisive. People that know this type of thing far more than you and I (namely, John Fay and Hal McCoy) believe the date to be safe would "normally" fall around July 1. It is hard and fast -- no. Does it make sense to roll the dice for a couple of extra starts...to me, no. Bringing him up a month from now would make little sense to me, but still far more sense than now. ------------------------------------------------------- I'm betting that they actually start Homer on Friday night and use Belisle on Saturday. Who knows?

How in the world can they know who will have met the following criteria 3 years down the road: Its for players who : have 2 years experience but less than 3 have 86+ days experience in the previous season are in the top 17% of all 2 year players in service time. ??? That last one simply makes everything a guess and I wouldn't even call it an educated guess. The only way to guarantee it is to NOT bring him at all this year. If that's not an option, you don't even try to take it into consideration.
June 5, 200719 yr Is it 100% that he is pitching Saturday? No its not official but they were in section 115 so I bought them. If its Belisle Saturday night I'll still be a Reds fan.
June 5, 200719 yr Are they soothsayers? Dude, they've been covering the game for 50 years, I think they have an idea of what they speak. Listen, contract or no contract, I don't think he should be brought up, so I'm not going to invest myself in a passionate debate about this. They both say that is "about" the point that "usually" kicks out the 3rd year -- that is good enough for me.
June 5, 200719 yr So, in the extremely small percentage of chance that Homer does very well, stabilizes the bullpen to a significant degree, how many will say that they were wrong?
June 5, 200719 yr HE'S NOT GOING TO PITCH OUT OF THE PEN!!! SO IS HE GOING TO BE THE 5TH STARTER INDEFINITELY OH GREAT SAGE? and if he pitches well, will you offer a retraction?
June 5, 200719 yr It's not even positive he's going to pitch this weekend yet. He's a starter and will remain one. Got it???
June 5, 200719 yr By the way, if he comes out and pitches really well his first outing or really poorly his first outing, that will tell us nothing. It will be the second and third time around the batting order (as long as he's starting) and second and third time against a team before we can really tell. In other words, save it if he pitches great or tanks it...
June 5, 200719 yr It's not even positive he's going to pitch this weekend yet. He's a starter and will remain one. Got it??? Yep, got it, so if in the event he pitches well, my question still stands, will those naysayers admit they're wrong, or does this fit into the "Cincinnati sports fan's mentality" thread?

Post 55. It's going to take a lot more than one outing either way for me to be convinced. Also, I'm not naysaying the player, it's the organizations 'development' of him... Hell, I hope he never gives up a hit...

Hell, I hope he never gives up a hit... Oh, I agree with you, just that along the lines of the mentality thread, it just seems to me that nothing positive is ever expected out of Reds fans, or "Cincinnati fans" as GT has put it. There's never upside, never hope, just gloom and doom. So now with Homer, who arguably is the best pitching prospect in years, we have to pray that he doesn't get some sort of mental distress beyond repair if he doesn't have immediate success. Well, why not say, "hey, this kid has a chance to come up here, get his feet wet, and possibly show folks he has the wherewithall to stand the ups and downs of the major league grind"? Instead, the majority seems to be hopelessly cautious IMO. Good Grief, let the kid pitch here before we condemn the powers that be for sabotaging the future of our beloved Reds. He's been very successful at every level, why not continue with the natural progression of things and see what happens?
