I find what Imus said appalling...but I defend his right to sound like a butthead whenever he chooses.

I would strongly disagree. Over his long career Imus has behaved as a shock jock. This isn't the first controversy that he has been involved in. He has often been accused of racism, misogyny, and homophobia. He is pretty tame compared to Howard Stern or Opie & Anthony, but IMO he is definetly not a news show.

My point is that you cannot say that Imus' show is comparable to Stern's. Imus has serious media and politicians on to discuss world events (without asking about sexual positions aka Stern). Thus, you can't call it a "comedy show."

You're making excuses IMO. Either it's wrong or it isn't, it can't be both ways. It doesn't matter if it's audience isn't bothered by the lyrics or not, wrong is wrong. This is a double standard, but double standards always come into play in these issues and thats why you'll continue to see this kind of stuff happen.

Imus to me seems to have many similarities to The Daily Show. Obviously The Daily Show is much more obvious that it is meant to be a comedic show but they also have on very serious guests and discuss very serious issues. Imus seems to be much like them in that sense but he is much more sly and subtle about the comedy which some people might not pick up on if they have never watched the show. (I'm not justifying anything here I'm just giving my take on how I view his show.)

I pretty much concur with the posts by Fastbreak. I am no Imus fan. He is an idiot and a Meathead. I do watch him sporadically to see what he will say next to shock people or intimidate or demean a person of any race.

 

Who are the Reverend Al and the "Reverend" Jackson to hit the airways and beat their chests and demand his destruction and removal as though they are without sin? Didn't The "Reverend" Jackson have an illicit affair, father a child out of wed lock, and who knows what other sins that have not been revealed? In fact, didn't he pay for the mistress and the child out of wedlock with funds from his so called "job" and donations ? Did he lose his "job" ?

 

The girls did look rather wild on the morning of the incident. They have really cleaned up their appearance now for this T.V. campaign. I have heard a number of blacks use the "N" word and worse numerous times. Why doesn't the African American community get outraged when the black athletes and movie stars marry white girls? Is this not demeaning to the African American girls?

 

If Imus was going to be removed from the airways for racial comments, it should have been done 25 years ago. He did nothing different (for him) on the morning in question. The black leaders who push for racial equality are defeating their cause and doing damage by the cruel way they are handling this matter.

 

The best thing that happened to Imus was to learn the true father of Anna Nicole's baby was identified today. Maybe that will take a bit of heat off him.

:thumb: I have tried to stay out of this thread and probably should have but here's my take on this. I am one of those people who watch Imus every morning. Yes, he has high powered people on, yes he has actors and singers on but let's just cut to the chase here, he is a shock jock. He just didn't start being a shock jock and few days ago, he's been one for close to 30 years. Was what he said right, NO. Should he have said what he said, NO. He should never ever have said those things about those girls.

 

So here's my problem - Why are those words accepted by some and when used by others - it's wrong? Please don't get me wrong - I hate all those words and they have no place in my world but no matter how you paint the subject, it is a double standard.

 

Now for Jesse and Al - I will use an Imus phrase - SHUT UP!!! They were so quick to grab their signs and walk in front of the studio. They couldn't jump fast enough to get on every tv show that would have them, spewing their words. Did they even stop to talk to those girls? I would be interested in knowing the answer to that question. Did they talk to those young ladies before they starting their rants?

 

Imus shouldn't never have said what he said but Jesse and Al yakking their jaws everywhere doesn't help the situation. Let the girls talk to Imus, let Imus take his knocks (that are well deserved) but let the people involved handle the situation. Jesse and Al need to clean up their own steps before they start trying to clean other people's steps.

I'm the very last person you'll see defending the lyrics but I'd say we're not comparing apples to apples.

Imus' show is basically a news show/ talk show which makes it different than hip hop.

That in fact may be true, but in the same respect it can be said that Imus is playing to his own audience as well, because those that choose to watch his show are wanting to hear just exactly what he has to say and those who dont, dont watch him.

 

I agree that what Imus said is stupid and totally irresponsible (because he is stupid and irresponsible), but it is in fact true that there are double standards that apply in this world when it comes to statements made from out of the behinds of the likes of the (just as idiotic) Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the world. The difference is that when these morons make their outrageous comments you just dont have all of this public outcry. I personaly find it appalling that the Hip Hop lingo is determined to be OK in our society because it is referred to as "just a part of our culture".
