Pelle Named NKY Player Of The Year...

Featured Replies

The Royals play the top teams in the American League.
I'm quite obviously not talking about schedule in that instance.

I'm saying it would be like a person on a team that has no prayer of doing anything in the post season winning.

As for SG's schedule I think some people need their eyes opened. You are only allowed to play 23 games (2 tourneys can count for 1 game each), so basically 21 regular season games. SG is bound to 14 conference games in the NKAC (Beechwood, Ludlow, etc.) Also, they must play every team in the district once. They already play Calvary in the NKAC, so that leaves Brossart, Scott and Campbell. So now your are up to 17 games. That leaves St. Pat, Pendleton, Bracken and Deming (all 10th region teams). Many of you don't realize SG only has 79 students in the high school and every team they play is bigger than them and they are bound to 17 games every year. That is why their coach scheduled Moeller, Turpin, Finneytown, Holmes, Boone, Dixie, NewCath, Highlands, Lou. Manuel, etc. over the summer. They competed with all of them. As for Corey, I personally witnessed him have 26 points and 10 assists against the Derek Smith West AAU that included Pettigrew, Beckham, Beaumont, etc.

In addition, they beat a McLean Co. team that would have been in the top 10 in N. KY and played well for 3 quarters against Bowling Green (in which Pelle had 29 thru 3 quarters). The top 8 players had just played 3 weeks earlier vs. CovCath in the football finals-so they were obviously very talented and athletic.

It doesn't matter who SG had to play or the size of their school; all that matters in this case is that Holmes's schedule was tougher, regardless of any reasons for that.

Also if BG was so talented and athletic, then how come they didn't crack the top 25 in the state, as around 6 of Holmes' opponents did?

I have watched all the NKY kids this year and I can say with out a second thought that Corey was the best talent this year. Austin is second and he did come on strong as the year went on but Corey keep the pace all year long. The schedule is not his fault you can't hold that against him.

Most Valuable or Outstanding Player selections, are often subjective and involve varying factors. I think it's a tribute to the area and basketball played in NKY, of how well both of the young men are mentioned.

With every award, some feel pleased and others, will disagree....Players have no control over their own schedules and must play, against the opponents presented.

For those of you who say Hill should have received the award, have you seen Pelle play? I have not so I have no clue if he's better than Austin or not.

Trust me, if it was up to SG's coach, they would have played Holmes, NewCath, etc. He is crazy enough to play anyone. They are limited because they MUST play 14 conference games. They have no choice. Also, they are in the 10th region and have to play a few games in their actual region.

Would have but still didn't.

If you look at 10th this year I would certainly say that the 10th's top 6 or 7 teams were better than the 9th's. A serious argument could be made that the 10th was the 3rd strongest region in the State. Also sg was in the best district top to bottom in the 10th. I don't think holmes wins the 10th this past season. With a tougher schedule the grove's record would have suffered but I don't think Correy's stats would have diminished much. I am a Brossart guy and we played just about everyone in Northern Kentucky and no one scored on us like he did. He passes, drives, shoots the 3 and dunks. Austin is a good player but in my opinion this award was given to the best player in this part of the state. Congrats to Corey, his coaches and his school. :thumb:

IMO Hill is this POY. I don't care what you say about Corey having to play against a weak schedule. Bottom line is this. Austin averaged 20 a game playing against the state's best. Also Austin had 3 other NKY All star players on his team who were going to get their numbers too which also proves why Austin is still the best in nky.

Best player on the best team in NKY should have won this IMO. Don't get me wrong, Corey is a great player and I've seen him play quite a few times. But if Holmes played the same schedule as them and Austin saw the same defenses as SG did, Austin would have averaged 30 a game too.

Hill shined when it mattered most...in the state tournament.

Pelle is a great player, if he would have been in the same position with a good team in the state tournament he would of shined as bright or maybe brighter than Austin. I see no wrong in this choice, congrats to the young man.

I also agree it is like someone from Royals in MLB winning MVP

Baci compared him to Ronnie Dawn, and Baci would know, if that helps.

1. Why should the best player ont he best team win POY?

2. Have you watched Pelle?

Good point. Congrats Corey, well deserved...

Congratulations to him.

I will say that it is easier to stand out at a small school team or on a weaker team than a larger school or better team with more overall talent and balance.

Austin had 2 other NKY all star 1st teamers in RIce and Henderson, but was still the best player on the team.

And yes I have seen Corey play, many times not only over the summer on the AAU circuit but also a few games this year.

As one person stated, it's a lot easier to stand out as the best player on a smaller level team with less talent than standing out like say Jacobs did for CCH and Hill did for Holmes.
