Trust me, if it was up to SG's coach, they would have played Holmes, NewCath, etc. He is crazy enough to play anyone. They are limited because they MUST play 14 conference games. They have no choice. Also, they are in the 10th region and have to play a few games in their actual region.

IMO Hill is this POY. I don't care what you say about Corey having to play against a weak schedule. Bottom line is this. Austin averaged 20 a game playing against the state's best. Also Austin had 3 other NKY All star players on his team who were going to get their numbers too which also proves why Austin is still the best in nky.

 

Best player on the best team in NKY should have won this IMO. Don't get me wrong, Corey is a great player and I've seen him play quite a few times. But if Holmes played the same schedule as them and Austin saw the same defenses as SG did, Austin would have averaged 30 a game too.

 

Hill shined when it mattered most...in the state tournament.

 

I don't recall Holmes finishing first in the final NKY poll?? So did you think Cooper or Uebel should have won it??

Austin had 2 other NKY all star 1st teamers in RIce and Henderson, but was still the best player on the team.

 

And yes I have seen Corey play, many times not only over the summer on the AAU circuit but also a few games this year.

 

As one person stated, it's a lot easier to stand out as the best player on a smaller level team with less talent than standing out like say Jacobs did for CCH and Hill did for Holmes.

The other side of that coin is that Corey was the focus of the other team's best defender every single game and faced gimmick defenses quite often. Austin is a great kid and a great player. He stayed away from all of the crap that surrounded him and succeeded, but I feel strongly that Cory Pelle deserved this award. By the way I don't share your opinion of holmes being the best team in Northern Kentucky.

I will say that it is easier to stand out at a small school team or on a weaker team than a larger school or better team with more overall talent and balance.

As with any POY, MVP, etc voting, there's always going to be controversy. Neither of these kids had anything to do with the voting, so let's stop knocking them. Both Pelle and Hill had outstanding year's. Pelle got his points while facing teams that were keying on him. Hill got his points with more talent around him that were getting theirs. We can all agree on this. If you want to look into common opponents, they have 4 (Pendleton, Beechwood, Campbell, and Scott). However, to sit here and type that one was head-and-shoulders above the other is a knock on these kids, and it shows you haven't seen both play multiple times.

 

Also, the arguments that the best player on the best team should win, and the best player on the team that goes the furthest hold no water. These are the problems with many of these awards.

On one hand, you don't face as many double and triple teams, so you get more open looks. However, especially in Austin's case, you don't get nearly as many touches.

 

Throughout most of the year while the other players on Holmes were in there, Austin did not get the ball nearly enough. When he did in the state tournament, they were a top 3 team in the state. That is a testament to Austin's ability, and the selfishness (for lack of a better word) of his teammates should not be something he is punished for.

BD Tech, you are obviously biased or simply don't WANT to believe that Pelle is better than one of your beloved Bulldogs, and I commend your loyalty, but quit making excuses why Pelle should not have gotten that award. It has been repeated many times in this forum why SG played who they did, and that speaks for itself.....conference games, 10th region games, and existing contracts in place. Corey Pelle didn't make the schedule, and shouldn't be criticized for playing it. In addition, the coach likely didn't say "hey, lets make a schedule that Corey can excel at". I've seen ALL PLAYERS in N. KY. and beyound, and yes, COREY PELLE DESERVED THIS HONOR! Congratulations Corey:thumb:

I understand where you're coming from and agree with you to an extent. While Corey may have saw the team they were playing best player night in and night out, that best defender in some cases wouldn't even be considered a top 5 player against a Holmes or CCH. Was Pelle 10th Region POY?

 

Bottom line is this...Both players are great student athletes but when it comes down to it Austin played the better competition and still shined while getting less shots every game than Corey.

Footballstud-you obviously didn't see Corey play or you would realize he should have taken twice as many shots as he did. He was too unselfish and could have got 40 if he wanted. The biggest reason Pelle deserves this is because he made his teammates better. They had 2 starters from a 2-20 JV team the previous year, Aaron Allen (only played 2 years of organized hoops) and Teddy Wiseman (who had avg 6 ppg the previous year). Pelle made these kids better and led the smallest school in the state to 20 wins and 3 very competitive games against the best team in N. KY (Brossart). I don't think Hill makes others around him better the way Corey does. By the way Preston Knowles was the 10th Region POY (for seniors) and was very deserving of the award. Knowles is better than Pelle and will most likely sign with VCU.

I never said a bulldog should have gotten the award. I said there were other players in NKY that could have put up the same numbers against the competition Pelle played against.

I would like to see what Hill could do against Brossart's D. Corey has avg 24 ppg in the 6 times they have played Brossart in the past 2 years.
