Track The Reds...

Figures....Dunn and Junior are both playing well and the rest of the team is sucking.

BTW, how awful has Arroyo been this year?

He hasn't been that bad. Limited run support doesn't help either.

Arroyo has been that bad...noway to really slice it...just look at the location of his pitches. He can't get a fastball by anyone and his off speed and breaking balls are belt high and getting hammered. I have watched nearly every game. His location is not even remotely CLOSE to being acceptable by his own standards to be effective in MLB.

He is one of my favorite players, but he is not pitching well by any stretch of the imagination.

No way to sugar coat Arroyo's performance overall. He's been very bad.

He's a career 4.31 ERA guy. Going into the game today he had a 4.98 ERA. I'm not sugarcoating anything; he's leaving a lot to be desired, namely in innings pitched, but be realistic, he's not going to go 8 innings every time with a 2.00 ERA.

Maybe Bronson just had a career year last year and he is simply pitching to his ability this year.

Maybe , just maybe he has been watching our bullpen too much and it is rubbing off on him.

:sssh:

The Reds off day Thursday would allow them to skip a starter. Bronson Arroyo sounded like a guy who could use some extra rest after Sunday's 11-4 loss to Texas.

Arroyo says he's fine physically. But he admitted he’s a bit worn down. His struggles began after a 129-pitch effort in San Diego.

“I’m fine,” he said. “But I don’t feel strong, but nothing’s bothering me. I don’t feel like have as much zip on my fastball. That can pose a problem. People don’t have to respect my off-speed stuff as much.”

Arroyo’s trying to get that zip back.

“You’re always tooling with your diet and your supplements and your workouts,” he said. “I got a find to a way to get back where I’m strong enough to beat guys with a fastball even when they know it’s coming.”

Again, the Reds have an off day Thursday in Seattle. That will give Arroyo an extra day of rest. The Reds could skip him altogether and give him 10 days or so rest.

This was from John Fay after today's game.

I mentioned this a few weeks back and it was played up as "talking points".

Tired arm? The 129 pitch effort was on the heels of three starts over 110+ or thereabouts.

Arroyo came in as an inning-eater, but with Boston he never had to throw as many pitches as he has been throwing lately.

Fastball was mid 80's today.

Usually he is hitting 90-91.

Hanging the deuce and not being able to run fastballs by guys is hurting him. Much of it is location, but you have to mix it up, keep'm honest with the fastball.

Has Narron overworked him? I think there is an argument for that.

In fairness to "Baseball Guy" he has dreaded going to the pen and it may have cost him Arroyo. Krivsky is partly to blame here as well.

Historically though Arroyo has had some pretty good July's so we will watch that.

Not quite every year:

2006: 2.57

2005: 4.50

2004: 4.18

2003: DNP

2002: 18.00 (one game)

2001: 9.95

His June ERA over the last 3 years is 4.30. His current June ERA of 7.23 is an aberration.

I forgot it was July and not June that he was bad last year. Must have been the 127 pitch start against Cleveland on June 13th last year that sent him spiraling...

In 35 starts last year Arroyo threw 100 or more pitches 31 times. 3 games of at least 120 pitches and only 4 under 100...

Great stats. Any opinion on whats going on with him now? Anything in mechanics? I read where Pole is mystified but is still working to figure it out.

It started with poor location on the whiffle ball curve. Hang that bad boy and watch it fly the other way. My guess is that he's been using more fastballs to make up for the curve problems and it's lead to a tired arm. I also think the May schedule had more to do with this than the 129 pitch start. There was only 1 off day in over a month, so there was no extra rest built in. Might as well let him skip the off day and get the 10 day rest to see if the problem corrects itself...
