June 9, 200719 yr Nice to see Baily get the win in his first outing. I have to say that I thought that the Reds bullpen would never hold it for him but they did. Baily has a very good fastball with good movement. They (fsn) did a segment on and his grips on different pitches on the pre game show. Outside of the Crappy Lefthander doing the interview it was pretty good. Also, as a poster stated earlier ......yes, he does have funky grip on his change up.
June 9, 200719 yr I think it's the funky grip on the change we've heard so much about... Knowing how you guys don't like FSN, you probably didn't see Welch's pregame with Homer. He went over all of his pitches and Homer showed the grip he used on each. For the changeup, he holds the ball with his pinky and ring finger and doesn't grip it with the middle or pointer finger. For the curve, he curls his pointer finger up into a ball and puts it at the top of the ball on the seam. For one curve, he rolls the ball forward with his finger nail during delivery and on the other, he does not. It was interesting to see the different grips. Homer said you won't see this being teached anywhere but this is how I hold it.
June 9, 200719 yr If he was throwing his change 88 i'd agree... He kinda addressed that in the pregame with Welch. Said he tried a normal grip but was throwing his changeup too fast, calling it a BP fastball. Said he had to go to the pinky/ring finger grip to get it to go slower without changing his throwing motion. He also said Griffey was funny and Dunn was BIG.
June 9, 200719 yr SportsCenter was a bit unkind to Homer tonight. SportsNation voted Homer Bailey the worst name of any pitcher in MLB history. Pretty big ouch for a guy who won tonight (which is more than can be said about alot of the Reds pitching on most nights).
June 9, 200719 yr Was really impressed with his mechanics. He almost strides to flat ground. One thing I never realized is how well he hides the ball. He brings it out of his glove and down to his right knee. Pretty tough to pick up. Tracer did make a comment after the game that I agreed with. He said that at 93-94, he won't be able to continue to live with his fastball only. However, at 97-98 he will definitely be able to do that. All in all I was pretty impressed. He didn't get rattled except for the balk call. He didn't agree with it but he shook it off and moved on. Great piece of hitting by BP on his homerun. IMO, a major league pitcher should not get an earned run if a run scores because a major league outfielder can't hit a cut off man. There's no reason for Travis Hafner scoring from 1st base when the ball doesn't even touch the wall. Hafner is a ginormous human being, kind of like a gorilla.

I didn't see a reply, but he reacted like it was sharply hit, but it appeared to kinda 'knuckle' off the bat. As for Homer, it was a solid outing. He was obviously having command issues with the offspeed stuff, and he was working in a hole a lot. The Indians also seemed to foul a lot of balls off early in the game driving his pitch count up. I'm glad Narron kept him in there to work out of the bases loaded, two out jam. When Pole reached the dugout, all the fans rose. It was like the bottom of the 9th, and I think you could tell Homer fed off of it a little.

Wonder if there is an issue with picking up the ball from there, at least tonight. BP's double wasn't hit very hard and was hit in the same place as the ball that ate up E5. There third baseman struggled with that one as well...

There third baseman struggled with that one as well... I know from experience, playing on the corners, some balls will buckle your knees. BP's double just went right under Blake's glove. He just didn't bend all the way over. However, he made some other solid plays. The Indian's have a very good defensive infield. The middle infielders made some great plays tonight.

We were talking about on the way home that it could've, and maybe should've, been a 2 or 3 run game. The Reds miss a cut off man, don't get a double play they should and had control problems. The Indians had a diving play by their 3rd baseman, SS and second baseman AND gave up 3 home runs. That can win and loss a lot of games throughout a season... On a side note, Baseball Tonight just showed Steve Trachsel's splittie...HOLY CRAP!!!
