7th straight state crown to private schools

I think you and I can see eye to eye on this one. Maybe we are just ahead of our time, or on the flip, KHSAA is just 20 or more years behind the curve?

I love competition but fair competition. I don't expect Transy to compete against UK for national championships, do you?

Of course, you are going to reply with what is unfair about the competition and I will reply with what is unfair about expecting Transy to compete against UK?

I think we agree on classes for all sports. However, a number of small schools play big-time in the world of sports. Look at the enrollments of Duke, then look at their record against the big schools. Ditto for Notre Dame in football. I don't like your urban/rural split but I could support multiple classes in basketball.:thumb:

My exact point. Why should high schools not have a similar choice? Why should Ludlow be forced to compete against a Boone County in all sports but 3?

It is NOT about trying to give everyone a trophy as consistently is tried to be painted. It is about letting schools compete against like schools. THE SAME THING that happens in college.

To borrow an analogy that is consistently used on BGP, in KY, we tell the apples they have to compete against the oranges, the kiwis, the bananas, other apples and all types of fruit. And some call that fair.

Very few of us are opposed to classification based on enrollment. However, you're putting open enrollment in the equation, and that's irrelevant.

And the college comparisons don't apply to high school athletics, period.

Too loose for publics as well?

No doubt about it. There is no difference if a public has student attendence from several areas.

Public schools as a whole, statewide, have been playing volleyball for only 7-8 years. Before that private schools played all the way back ino the '70's. Look at the feeder programs and you will readily see why private schools are much better. Some public grade schools don't even play the sport. How can you expect to compete that way.

This is beginning to happen in boys lacrosse as well, Holy Trinity started a middle school team this year. St. Patricks has enough kids for a team. CAL has a middle school team. Collegiate & KCD have had middle school programs for 3-4 years. In Lexington, Sayre, LC & The Lexington School all have MS teams. It's like a moving train, you can still jump on it when it's beginning to get cranked up & is moving slowly. But if you wait too long, you just end up jumping in front of it.

Would you divide them purely on size (population) of school? Cause I believe there is a HUGE difference between LCA as a Class A school and Bracken County or Deming as a class A school.

LCA in Lexington has probably close to 300,000 or over to draw from in just Lexington, not including any surrounding counties.

If you took every single county that Bracken (9,000 in 2000) borders, it looks like they would have an area close to only 63,000. So, even if they had open enrollment and would draw from Mason (17,000), Pendleton (16,000), Robertson (2500, yep that is right Deming draws from a county with only 2 thousand 500 hundred people), Harrison (18,000), they might still not have a close to comparable situation.

All stats are according to Wikipedia and the 2000 census.

Now whether that difference is sufficient for a split is the question. And a good question to consider.

LSU, I don't offer this as an argument to go the route we did earlier this week but information for thought.

I could live, possibly, with a purely class split but not sure that is addressing the issues that the Prop 20 was trying to address. (and again, I don't think it is a purely dump on privates problem. I think it goes beyond that.) It seems dividing at population size is a band-aid approach that just might delay the issue and it rears it's ugly head 10 years down the road, instead of just addressing it now.

I would prefer to do something now, if possible, and be over with it, instead of having these discussions every single cotton picking year.

Lexington Catholic started a Lacrosse program 3 years ago, and if no other Lexington school (public or private) starts one for another 10 years, it would make sense for Lexington Catholic to have the best program in Lexington. What has happened with Volleyball is the same thing that I see happening with Lacrosse.

How did LCA get so good so fast?

Like most private schools through recruits and transfers.

Louisville privates are open about how target players in middle schools to fit their styles of play and then bring in those middle schoolers.

I highly doubt Iroquois does that.

When the coaches even say they do it is being done.

No usual arguing about it.

Agree to disagree.

I dont know why anyone from the 16th region would complain about students going outside their districts to school.

As was written in the Daily Independent these schools have open enrollment with reciprocal agreements and there were hundreds of students attending a public school out of district with NO tuition paid(as was noted in the article).

Good point. That is why I support the go ahead for any kid to go to any school of his/her choosing with the approval of the KHSAA approval on whether or not they can compete athletically.

How would you class then? As I pointed out an open enrollment for Bracken County is a MUCH DIFFERENT CREATURE than open enrollment for a Lexington school.

I think free transfers, while I understand the freedom aspect and am a supporter of voucher system, will make a pooling of talent at one school more of a likelihood than presently.

Guess the same as Iroquois got good in the last 3 years!

LCA has been building to this point. As a coach who has had them on our schedule many times and played them others times in summer ball, they have been getting better and better each year.

I truly believe the NEXT great step you will see in dominating sports is the non-Catholic private schools. Christians who are NOT Catholic but want to send their kids to a private school Christian setting.

I wonder how many non-Catholic Christians have been attending Catholic private schools that will now be moving from them to a LCA-type school. I think Calvary Christian with the right marketing could become the PLAYER in NKY as they and Heritage are the only two private Christian, non-Catholic school in NKY. LCA has shown what they can do in Lexington. Baseball title last year or previous year. Girls basketball title this year.

Are there any other CHristian, non-Catholic private schools in Louisville besides Highview Baptist? Imagine what could be done if Southeast got behind a school as an outreach? WOW!!!!!!! 17,000 each Sunday forming a school of their own. 5 years and they would have a state title.

Here is two questions for you...let's say Iroquois had beaten Lex Christian....would this thread be open at this moment?

I think the bottom line is no matter how many classes, blah, blah, that the system is adjusted to...some will always strongly dislike the "privates" and wish them nothing but failure! Very sad IMHO!!!

I made a post in Girls basketball hoping for a Pike County Central/Iroquois final.

Some will but not all that stand for a change feel that way.
