7th straight state crown to private schools

Featured Replies

I hate it but why fight it. I am starting to think the Khsaa does not care about what we think. They are glad to crown all of the politicians kid's with championship rings and fill diddle arena with 1000 fans and lose a ton of money.

If you are implying that private schools bring less fans, you are mistaken about this years finals. The LCA crowd was much larger than the Iroquois crowd. The finals should have had a much larger attendance with a public school in it, but the attendance for the championship was only about 500 more than for the semifinals (which contained two publics and two privates).

That is true. They did bring a much larger crowd than even I expected to see. Not a very good turn out for the game was it? I wonder why that was? If I had to say attendance dropped considerably on Saturday night where as with the boys state tourney upcoming, I would predict that the attendance on saturday night will go up?

I just think that the rules are too loose for attendance.

Too loose for publics as well?

I like the idea of transferring only with the approval of the khsaa. You can transfer anytime but it has to be approved before you can compete athletically. Boy that would ruffle some feathers.

I really was expecting a much greater turnout from basketball fans in general. The lower area was occupied by people that did not have tickets for the seats because the people or schools that bought the tickets did not use them. I don't know what the attendance generally is at the girl's Sweet Sixteen, but 3,500 was the attendance figure given in the paper on Sunday as the attendance at the championship.

Sounds like a lot of people, but compared to the boys tournament where people who have no connection to any team in the tournament attend the games, it is low. I saw very few people there who did not have a dog in the fight.

I think the difference is the fact that the boys draw more people. And there are a lot of business people in Lexington that buy up tickets and make it a tradition to attend every year. I don't see that as much in Bowling Green. Not as many businesses in Bowling Green.

Private schools have the ability to "lure" students from outside a given area. Certain schools in this state have students from as many as 12 different counties and three different states. So, how is that fair to the public schools who have a designated area from which they draw students?

Argue all you like and rationalize it any way you want, those are not fair ground rules and it will not change as long as the KHSAA doesn't want it to. The member schools made their opinions known and that didn't work out too well. That tells me all I need to know.

I'm not saying anything about LCA in particular, but private schools as a group have a distinct advantage in enrolling students.

All the people always point to 3or4 private schools in Louisville and Lexington and assume this applies to ALL private schools. So private schools "lure" students by saying come play for us, and by the way bring $4,000-$8000 for tuition with you. As has been pointed out so often EVERY student at public schools is on a full scholarship. The Khsaa is still waiting for documented proof of "luring" so the can nail a private school. By the way, I suppose NO public schools "lure" kids to their school?

Go look at the volleyball titles also.

Public schools as a whole, statewide, have been playing volleyball for only 7-8 years. Before that private schools played all the way back ino the '70's. Look at the feeder programs and you will readily see why private schools are much better. Some public grade schools don't even play the sport. How can you expect to compete that way.

How did LCA get so good so fast?

Like most private schools through recruits and transfers.

Louisville privates are open about how target players in middle schools to fit their styles of play and then bring in those middle schoolers.

I highly doubt Iroquois does that.

When the coaches even say they do it is being done.

No usual arguing about it.

Agree to disagree.

Who were the recruits and transfers? What coaches have said this? As pointed out by scooterbob if you don't name names it is all hearsay.

You have to understand that the boys team at Jay's school had 4 starters who were transfers. 3 from outside the district boundaries.

No one on that side of the argument is looking for competiton, they are looking to ease the path to a trophy. JMO, of course.

Ouch, what say you to these charges Jay?

I love competition but fair competition. I don't expect Transy to compete against UK for national championships, do you?

Of course, you are going to reply with what is unfair about the competition and I will reply with what is unfair about expecting Transy to compete against UK?

It's ridiclulous to compare high school sports to college sports. On the college level, schools choose at which level they wish to compete and fund their athletic programs accordingly.

Transylvania doesn't even attempt to compete on the same level as Kentucky. On the other hand, other small private colleges do ... some very well.

My exact point. Why should high schools not have a similar choice? Why should Ludlow be forced to compete against a Boone County in all sports but 3?

It is NOT about trying to give everyone a trophy as consistently is tried to be painted. It is about letting schools compete against like schools. THE SAME THING that happens in college.

To borrow an analogy that is consistently used on BGP, in KY, we tell the apples they have to compete against the oranges, the kiwis, the bananas, other apples and all types of fruit. And some call that fair.

Good point lbbc.
