Close, 6th grade. And I'm sure he's aware of his "status" here and abroad. And I'd guess that he may have done that at the end of the game as an exclamation point to end the soap opera. Say what you will, but all of us geniuses have no idea the burdens he carries as well. There's something to be said for anonymity, which has escaped him since he played for the Huntington Red in the youth league many years ago. So, with one swift violently graceful play he put an end to the soap opera, to which we'll never see the sequel in this area again. I'm sure there are those who hope for and can't wait for his demise at the next level and beyond, but for me,,,,I wish him enormous success.

 

Unlike the naysayers, spindoc has known Mayo well during the entire saga. He knows things not known by those who like to judge from a distance. Well said, spindoc, and the dunk and aftermath were a fine way to end the adventure.

Yes, it is so obvious that he has made every effort to stay out of the spotlight. If this is was a soap opera then he was the lead in it of his own accord. But his parents are as much if not more to blame for the situation. They should have been more careful of who they let take charge of his situation and his bouncing around from school to school certainly did not help.

Many long for the spotlight. Few find it. Even fewer have the spotlight follow them around in the 7th grade.

People come on and give the impression that he longed for anonymity and yet he does everything to the contrary, that is what I was talking about. And fewer may find "the spotlight" in 7th grade but then again I hope that there are fewer 14 and 15 year old 7th graders each year.

If Darius Miller or Bud Mackey, or any Kentucky Star did the same thing, we'd be celebrating it as a great and exciting play. People just love to hate OJ Mayo. It's sad.

 

Anyone pretending HHS didn't play a harder schedule than ANY Kentucky team is biased. And they may not have won the 11th region title, upsets do happen, but they would've been the favorite, easy.

They did play a very good out of state schedule, no doubt about that. But I still don't think that HHS would have won the Sweet Sixteen.

I wish him the best of luck. I hope OJ Mayo has great success and is a star. But at the same time lets look at the situation for what it is.

1. Hes made a bunch of stupid mistakes and probably been given a lot of breaks because he can play so well.

2. He is surrounded by a lot of people (not everyone) who really dont care about him. They just care about what they can do for him.

3. He has has been to 3 different schools in the past 4 or 5 years. He has shown no loyalty and I think obviously there has been something wrong with the way he has been handled.

4. He has the talent that makes his potential go throuth the roof!

^ He does have a world of talent and it would be a shame to see him waste it by not getting a better grip on himself and those that he allows to be around him. And you are right about the people around him; there are too many around him that are looking out for their own interests and not his best interests at heart.

Coach Hicks would light any player up on his team that pulled a stunt like this. For one - Mackey wouldn't have been in the game up 40 with time running down. For two - I don't know that Bud could do that dunk :lol: But for three - He knows better than to try.

There are some who would say a dunk, technical, and showing up a beaten and inferior team team in the closing seconds of a blow out is not such a fine way to end the adventure. A very classless act by a great basketball talent. However, I place most of the blame on the obviously challenged coach who still had him in the game.

I grew up reading Bronc Burnett and Chip Hilton novels extolling the virtues of good sportsmanship and hard work. I’m as old school as anybody on this board, but to not understand that Mayo is on an entirely different level from anyone we’ve ever had come up in this area is to ignore the obvious. This kid has been the “show” at whatever school he’s attended since the 7th grade. He’s been a prime revenue generator at every school he’s attended. He has his own (reasonably accurate) entry on Wikipedia… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OJ_Mayo . As much as being a phenomenal basketball talent, he’s an entertainer.

 

If some of you resent that or refuse to acknowledge it that’s your choice, but it’s obvious that Mayo understands who and what he is better than any of you. Your complaining reminds me of Antonio Salieri who complained that God would invest His incredibly divine talent in such a vulgar creature as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. :lol:
