No, I cannot walk on water, as far as I know Jesus was the only one to do that without props. And I am far from without sin, at least I admit that. But I can say that I know what is right and wrong conduct on a court and what he and his coaches allowed to happen at the end of that game was terrible sportsmanship and just another way for OJ Mayo to make it all about him and take away from his team mates. He never should have been in the game, a classier move would have been to take out the starter all at once, but this coach never had control this year so what would one expect in the closing moments of a runaway win. :thumb:

I am just glad he will be out of the local scene starting next year and we can move beyond all this OJ stuff. It's way past due - very old!!!!

Classy or Classless? It is a game. It looks to me like he was just having fun in a game that was invented for fun. He was also putting on a show that everyone there wanted to see. If it doesn't affect you how can it offend you.

There are some who would say a dunk, technical, and showing up a beaten and inferior team team in the closing seconds of a blow out is not such a fine way to end the adventure. A very classless act by a great basketball talent. However, I place most of the blame on the obviously challenged coach who still had him in the game.

It may have been fun for the supporters of HHS to see Mayo still in the game with a 40 point lead but I doubt that the other team was very amused by it. Lack of class by OJ Mayo and the coaches that allowed him to still be in the game at that point. Win with class, lose with class. Why does a player like OJ Mayo, who everyone knows is an obvious talent, have to rub salt in the wounds of a team getting destroyed late in the game?

You must be some kind of a modern sociology teacher. For whatever reason, Mayo was still in the game. That was the coach's decision- not his. If you knew Mayo, which you obviously don't, you would know that he is a competitor who gives his best at all times. He is no loafer or slacker. Therefore, he continued to give his best and finished his six year high school career with a final flair. Good for him.

 

I'm sure that, if anyone other than some BGP complainers were offended, they will recover without any permanent sociological scarring.

 

Ovinton's high school basketball days are over other than for honors and all-star games. Why don't we close the book on him in "Boys Basketball" and wait to pick him up in college and the NBA. Surely we can find someone somewhere in the Commonwealth to salute and defame.

I think that if he had asked to come out that the coach would have had no problem with that, anyone that watched any of the games could tell that the coach did not run that team. Yes, now he will not be playing with "boys", he will be moving on to play against people his own age finally. Oh, and I am not a teacher, not everyone on here is or has been one.

So, if Ashland or anyone else around here had a player with his/her accomplishments and with the ability to perform such a play, I would believe that Rose Hillers, as well as other locals, would accept the fact that he/she had earned the right to go out with a final and decisive exclamation point play. :thumb:

 

As for dinoradja's latest rationalization, I cannot come up with a rebuttal to the proposition that Mayo should have instructed the coach to remove him from his final of almost 200 high school games. I'm afraid I miss the logic of the argument. Maybe, since it was general knowledge that HHS would win decisively, Mayo should have told the coach that he would not play at all in the game so as to provide SC with more self esteem since they would lose by under 20 instead of over 40.

Hey, here is a radical thought? OJ, being such a great teammate, could have went out of the game and presented someone off the bench with a chance to play more at the end of the game. Then he could have been a class act on two fronts, to the other team and his own, and he would not have looked like an arrogant showboater.

So when or if he becomes a millionaire then that makes showboating, egotistical arrogance alright? His days at Rose Hill had zero impact on me personally or any of the teams that I supported locally. But he did prove something to be true while he was there; he was pretty much a hired gun, going from school to school and looking out pretty much for himself first and team later. Not true?

I guess I can understand… Google “O.J. Mayo” and you find over 6.35 million links. “Dino Radja” brings only 62,500. Granted, most of these don’t apply to either player, but it does represent a difference of 101.6 times more hits for a kid that hasn’t even played a regulation game beyond the high school level.

 

For Dino to have played in Europe, the Olympics, the World Games, and the NBA this has to be a source of anguish.

 

Between Dino Radja and Toni Kukoc, Michael Jordan took Kukoc. Jordan (now the minority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats) is also courting Mayo. I’ll grant you that Mayo has yet to prove he can do anything in college or the NBA, but if one of (if not) the greatest to ever play the game thinks Mayo has the stuff, I have to agree with him. I’ve watched him since the 7th grade, and he’s unlike anyone else.

This kid is simply playing the game with wide open enthusiasm enhanced by an abnormal dose of God given talent. If anyone is guilty of “showing up” the other team it’s the HHS coach, not the kids playing the game.
