I've been a little under the weather, so I haven't posted much at all since before the weekend. More thoughts about the regional final:

 

1. The two superstars cancelled each other out; Clark had just a little bit more help on Sunday, and as a result they won. If I didn't say it before, Bennett came up huge toward the end. Without him in the lineup, Clark doesn't win on Sunday.

 

2. Browning going down was a punch in the gut. Mason's chances went from good to about even when that happened.

 

3. Clark County, and more particularly Knowles, made plays when it counted. Everyone knows about the long bomb at the end of the third quarter that absolutely killed Mason's momentum, but I thought that just about important was a play real early in the game. Darius threw down a dunk, then Knowles outran everyone down the floor and answered with an uncontested layup. Every time Mason did something, Clark and Knowles had an answer.

 

4. Officials didn't determine the outcome of the game. There weren't enough calls or non-calls that went one way or the other. The players determined the outcome, and that's what you want to see.

 

5. As I've said many times before, I'm just a middle-aged old man who happens to be a sports fan; and I hope that most will agree that this game was a sports fan's dream - two heavyweights slugging it out. Because I'm just a casual fan, it's a lot easier for me to let go and say "Wait 'till next year" than it is for lots of other folks. And while I'll never root for Clark County WHEN THEY'RE PLAYING THE ROYALS (or any other team, for that matter); I'll gladly root for the Cardinals in the Sweet 16. Correct or not, I'm of the opinion that the team in the Sweet 16 represents not only the individual school but the entire region, and I want the 10th represented well. I believe that Clark County will do so.

These are the exact comments that run the risk of coming back and biting you in the backside. Not very smart. Mason will be a very good basketball team next year but anything can happen on any given day. Mason County should be favored to win the region next year, much like they were this year and unforturnately that didn't happen.

You have some great points. Bennett did not play in the game in Feb when Mason won.

Agree on the 3pointer bomb by Preston and that the Cards had a answer for every time Mason tried to make a run. Felt that Preston's "supporting" cast rose to the occasion and was one of the major differences in the game. Also, don't have the stats with me, but I believe that Mason did not shoot very well from the foul line. I know that cost GRC the game last year.

For years I have supported every 10th region team that has gone to Rupp. I sure hope the rest of the 10th region will join in with mcpapa and support the Cards.:thumb:

I would think that a legit shot attempt would have to be in the direction of your teams basket

 

While the "in the direction of your teams basket" is not in the written rules, that factor would weigh into the official's decision of whether it was a valid "try" or not.

I agree . Posting things like that are things that will get a team fired up as we saw last sunday.

Two questions to be answered.....

 

Did the better team win today? Yes

Was the game played at the Fieldhouse? Yes

 

 

This proves the point that if you play the game on the moon the better team will win. When Lofton was at Mason that is all I heard that "Mason has the home court advantage" Mason had the best player and team. Same as today. The game played at the Fieldhouse and Clark had the best player and team today.

I agree with Pressrow... I dont think he said that Mason Co. didnt have an advantage, but the only way to solve this problem is for someone to build a gym suitable to hold the region. If you have never seen a 10th region final game you wouldnt understand. There were 6000 people there this year and what does Montgomery Co. hold?

Most of the new gyms built in the state have a mandated size I believe decided by the state on how big a the gymnasium can be.

 

So according to PRESSROW the only true answer is to build a bigger gym, come on. How feasible is that? I usually agree w/what PRESSROW has to say, but to me that is a cop out post. Very few schools would be able to build a new gym w/the size big enough to host the regional.

 

I for one like the games at Mason County, it is tradition. It also is an ADVANTAGE for the Royals to play on the court that they practice on and play all their home games during the regular season and sometimes the districts depending on where they are played in a particular season. There is no denying that argument, doesn't mean the best team will not win the game, it means there is an advantage.

 

There is a reason that the NCAA will not allow teams like UK, Syracuse, Louisville, or any other college team to not play in the regional sites where they play their home games. UK will never play at Rupp or the 'Cuse will never play in the Carrier Dome!
