St. X starts the 2026 season with new head coach Brian Landis who will implement his system which emphasizes toughness and playing with relentless effort. He was asked by local radio host Terry Meiners what type of offense he would run since he has a defensive background, and he said he’s a big fan of Kirby Smart and wants to play that style where are tough in the trenches and can run the ball while also taking some shots down the field in the passing game. It will also be interesting what other coaches he will bring in to fill out the staff.

 

The offense graduates nearly all the starters with RB Cooper Yates the lone skill position starter returning, who ran for 499 yards and 4 touchdowns and had 210 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Other contributors returning at RB are Herschel Highfield and freshman Brennan Grinstead. With Mason Trimble graduating the QB position will most likely be a competition between Will Burmester who finished the season as the backup and Beau Artman who had one start last year at Boyle County. Other younger QB’s who could be in the mix is Jackson Currier and Austin Jacobson. WR Marlon Harbin who started 4 years and is off to the University of Louisville is a guy that will be sorely missed. TE Oliver Kukla who played some returns and the only WR with yards returning is Noah Barker with 36 yards. The O-Line looks to return Charlie Hummel and talented freshman Gavin Carwhile.

 

The defense graduated most of the unit and the secondary looks like going to be the strength of the unit with the return of two starting DB’s with the 3^rd leading tackler Jamari Carroll who had 54 tackles, 2 interceptions and Te’Are Wilson-Towns who had 47 tackles. DE Korey Tutt returns who had 26 tackles with 7 for a loss and 6 sacks. Freshman DB Zaid Charasika should see varsity action this year. S Landon Kirtley who was injured last season looks to return and contribute. LB Henry Atkins who had 31 tackles last season, should play a bigger role this season.

 

The question for St. X this upcoming season is will this be a reloading or rebuilding year. Overall, the team should be young with several juniors and sophomores playing, which should bode well for the 2027 season. The defense returns the most production so the defense should be the strength of the team. With so many new starters the scrimmages and early games will tell us how good they will be.

 

X has 3 Olinemen returning that stand at least 6’6” and weigh 290 or better. (Gavin Carwhile F, Graham Centimole S, and James Campbell J). It was tough for them to contribute from the sideline last year.  Charlie Hummel is 6’3” 260 and started all 14 games last year. He was honorable mention all district. That’s quite a bit to work with up front on the O-line. 
 

My hope is the new OLine coach works to develop these guys between NOW and next December to  play physical football. I am hoping the coach Landis is focused on the last game next December and not the first game in August. 
 

How this team looks at the start of the season should not be remotely similar to where they are at the end.

The St. X run game has not been good for a very long time.  It will be incumbent upon the new coach and his staff to make some progress in that regard.  I think this regression has been caused by the lack of development or emphasis on offensive linemen and the lack of importance placed on the run game.

I am not saying that "3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust" is the answer, but a return to physical play on offense matched with a balanced, complimentary passing game is necessary.

 

Hope this is the start of a fun rivalry. Would like to see it go into 27/28.

I would like for this rivalry to continue and I also would like to see Boyle vs Trinity. 

Coach Landis's son is an addition to the WR room that is hit hard by graduation.

In my mind, Glasers tweet is a shot at Wallace and Wilford.

Glaser is old school run the ball coach so I could see where might not be a fan of the Wallace style of play. I know Coach Glaser isn't fan of running out of shot gun on the goal line. I played under Glaser and I remember us running the wish bone on the goal line.

I was told that Hazard's starting QB from last season, rising junior William Shoptaw, is St. X-bound.

Mike Glaser is a fan of Mike Glaser.

Glaser was a great football coach, a Hall of Fame coach who really had a hand in making St. X the St. X we all think of these days. 

But his continuing commentary and presence are a problem. The incessant jabs and sub-tweets that have marked the last decade have been in poor taste. 

A legend that hangs around can be a tremendous asset... or a tremendous impediment.

I completely, COMPLETELY agree. If you look at some of the other greats who have stepped away...Bob Beatty, Dale Mueller, Lynn Ray, Noel Rash...they just keep their mouths shut, publicly, about how folks are running the programs they left, and in most all regards, that's for the best.

Even Chuck Smith, with his podcast, doesn't make it a point to ever really add specific commentary on how things are done at Boyle County.

Coach Glaser needs to pipe down. Sure, put on a St. X sweatshirt and go to games. Shake some hands. Give your past players a slap on the back when you see them and talk all you want about how great things were back in the good 'ol days. But keep it to yourself about what's going on in the program now. You're not helping, Coach.

Looks like a good addition on paper for the Tigers; we'll see how it all plays out coming from Hazard to Louisville.
