St. X starts the 2026 season with new head coach Brian Landis who will implement his system which emphasizes toughness and playing with relentless effort. He was asked by local radio host Terry Meiners what type of offense he would run since he has a defensive background, and he said he’s a big fan of Kirby Smart and wants to play that style where are tough in the trenches and can run the ball while also taking some shots down the field in the passing game. It will also be interesting what other coaches he will bring in to fill out the staff.

 

The offense graduates nearly all the starters with RB Cooper Yates the lone skill position starter returning, who ran for 499 yards and 4 touchdowns and had 210 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Other contributors returning at RB are Herschel Highfield and freshman Brennan Grinstead. With Mason Trimble graduating the QB position will most likely be a competition between Will Burmester who finished the season as the backup and Beau Artman who had one start last year at Boyle County. Other younger QB’s who could be in the mix is Jackson Currier and Austin Jacobson. WR Marlon Harbin who started 4 years and is off to the University of Louisville is a guy that will be sorely missed. TE Oliver Kukla who played some returns and the only WR with yards returning is Noah Barker with 36 yards. The O-Line looks to return Charlie Hummel and talented freshman Gavin Carwhile.

 

The defense graduated most of the unit and the secondary looks like going to be the strength of the unit with the return of two starting DB’s with the 3^rd leading tackler Jamari Carroll who had 54 tackles, 2 interceptions and Te’Are Wilson-Towns who had 47 tackles. DE Korey Tutt returns who had 26 tackles with 7 for a loss and 6 sacks. Freshman DB Zaid Charasika should see varsity action this year. S Landon Kirtley who was injured last season looks to return and contribute. LB Henry Atkins who had 31 tackles last season, should play a bigger role this season.

 

The question for St. X this upcoming season is will this be a reloading or rebuilding year. Overall, the team should be young with several juniors and sophomores playing, which should bode well for the 2027 season. The defense returns the most production so the defense should be the strength of the team. With so many new starters the scrimmages and early games will tell us how good they will be.

 

Love the Charasika kid but awfully small for varsity DB just yet. So far they have brought the whole staff back except one retiree(OLine) and RB coach. We will see if that makes sense or not. Hope is Landis can get some more out of them. Very predictable on D the last couple of years and not having any resemblance of a power running game in the red zone has hurt the Tigers that reside on Poplar Level Road.

X has 3 Olinemen returning that stand at least 6’6” and weigh 290 or better. (Gavin Carwhile F, Graham Centimole S, and James Campbell J). It was tough for them to contribute from the sideline last year.  Charlie Hummel is 6’3” 260 and started all 14 games last year. He was honorable mention all district. That’s quite a bit to work with up front on the O-line. 
 

My hope is the new OLine coach works to develop these guys between NOW and next December to  play physical football. I am hoping the coach Landis is focused on the last game next December and not the first game in August. 
 

How this team looks at the start of the season should not be remotely similar to where they are at the end. 

Lots of size but feet like blocks doesn't help always. They have to get quicker, stronger and develop a strong lean in their blocking. Questions about OLine coach moving to Varsity but time will tell. He brings energy for sure.

He looks pretty solid. Sophomore to junior year can be a good jump in skills and maturity. The 60% completion percent offers a lot of room for improvement. The move from 1A to 6A at the highest level of competition will be a challenge. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I agree just not sure St X has an experienced enough QB coach to see that growth, Time will tell.

Coaching develops technique, power,  feet and bodies. It’s been absent on the Oline. Several kids developed themselves but overall the player development was lacking. X hasn’t used a sled for about 9 years. That’s not the kids fault.  The finesse blocking game showed its worth.

Neither of the rising Seniors are Trimble but most high school quarterbacks aren’t.

Burmester has a nice arm and very accurate. Reads progressions very well. Baseball player and good athlete. Not a real threat to run every down. Very bright kid.

Artman is 6’4” or better and has a rocket arm. Not as accurate. Very fast and outstanding athlete. If the offense needs a dual threat quarterback he has the edge. If he’s not the quarterback he will be on the field somewhere else.

Artman struggled at Boyle but the blocking and play selection was abysmal. Burmester played really well but they didn’t put him in until the 4th quarter.

Both are great kids and very well liked by their teammates. Neither have let their competition interfere with the team.

The rising sophomore came in with alot of fanfare so I would not count him out. I suspect it’s a step up from 1-A to 6-A or 1-A to Boyle. If a transfer is anointed without a competition it won’t sit well with the team. If the transfer is better and earns it the fact that he is transfer won’t be an issue at all. It’s should be an interesting competition.

When is this transfer supposed to occur?

You really think they care how it would sit with the team? Those days left 10 years ago.

Yup. Shoptaw didn’t transfer to sit, imo. I think he wins the job outright in camp or soon after.   

Ruffling feathers is indeed long gone. I don’t necessarily agree with the nonstop transfers everywhere and every year, but the cat is out of the bag at this point.

The kid’s Dad moved his practice to Louisville. I doubt that was a football based decision.
