I'd rather not go there!!! It would be pointless

Okay, here it goes.

I do like the rumor about Stein and Ball moving to the line. I do like the sacrifice they are making to better the team. It was kind of the same situation that Brad Bardo did in 2004 to better his team. The rest of the Offensive line will fall into place. I will let the experts fill in the rest of the blanks on the line. I still think the Offensive backfield needs to be refined. When i say refined, that means Clay Cecil moves the defensive sind of the ball where he was dearly missed this passed season imo. He would be much better served on defense than just a really good running QB. He can still play Offense, but only running and catching the ball. Leave the QB position to Tony. If Tony makes only half the improvement his brother Gino made from his soph to junior, Highlands will win state the next 2 years!!!!! The running game will pick up right where it left off last year without the obvious human highlight. Josh Conner with Clint Crawford,Clay Cecil and many very talented underclassman coming in will carry much of the load. Dale will have a hard time keeping everybody happy, that's for sure. I like to see Trey Jurgens get the nod at tight end with a very big and strong young Brandon Roller coming in as a soph. The wide receiver postion can definately be a factor this season with some new faces in the mix. With Draper being a QB and with some young in the making superstars, the wide receivers will be fine. My Ten cents on the defense will come soon enough. :ylsuper:

Where is Highlands from? I haven't heard of them.

My guess is twofold- develop a better passing game and make sure not to overwork Josh Conner.

I agree with your point about missing Cecil on Defense. That last Cov Cath game he played a wicked OLB. He sprinted from one side of the field to the other and tracked down the ball carrier. He is explosive and could be a wicked OLB opposite Drew Simons. Your take on Guigdugli taking over the reins is nice on paper and family history but your talking about a huge dropoff in leadership abilities. The QB is not just a thrower or a runner but he is a true leader that other teammates look up to and respect. I personally and from what I have heard from others around town do not believe Gudugli will garner this respect and step in to lead the Birds to their 17th State Championship. JMO....but I like your take on Cecil back at OLB... man he is so fast and there is no Offensive lineman in the state that can block him coming around the end on a blitz.

I don't think its any secret that Dale plans on playing Cecil and several others both ways next year. Perhaps not full time, but at least part time, assuming people stay healthy. Whether thats at OLB or at DB depends on how various people at those positions step up. Cecil is talented enough to play corner, safety and OLB on defense so Dale will be able to play him at the position needed. Same with Simons. They provide Dale with a lot of flexibility.

As to Guidugli, he has proabably more athletic talent than any of his brothers and has the potential to be a leader. He's certainly got the cockiness and swagger of a leader. Its up to him to show the other players and coaches that he is willing to be a leader by example by keeping his nose clean and working hard this off season. Then again, if he doesn't do that, he won't beat out anyone for the qb position anyway, so it becomes a moot issue.

You make a good point here. Clay is a natural leader, who placed at quarterback, is in the natural position to lead.

There has been some very good quarterbacks from other schools who played both ways. One player in particular that comes to mind is Brandon Smith who played for Boyle ('01-04). He two was a quarterback who played outside linebacker, and did an excellent job at both. IMO he was the best player on both sides of the ball. With the great shape that Clay is in, he too, is physically capable of playing both ways. So I ask one question, why can't clay play QB on offense and OLB on defense?

I personally think he can but Dale has a thing, issue, or whatever you want to call it, about letting his starting QB play defense. I cannot think of a QB that has also played D since Dale has been the coach at Highlands.

How many of the QB's in the past were skilled enough to play on defense? I would like to go back a few posts and revisit the moves of Stein and Ball to the offensive line. Why is this move being made? With the success that the freshman teams have had in the past few years, are there not enough lineman capable of playing/contributing at the varsity level without moving these two guys to positions that they have never played to the best of my knowledge.

Well there's always a first time for everything. :ylsuper:

Personally, I would love to see Stein catching the ball and Ball smashing through the line, but it does seem like it could benefit the team. The young guys are good, but they don't have any varsity experiance like these two guys do. I can completely understand dale's thinking when he moves Ball to the line. Dale doesn't believe in power backs. But Stein is a little harder for me to cope with since he was IMO the best reciever for the birds last season. Plus, when he has the ball in his hands, someone is going to get run over in the process of getting 5+ yards-after-catch. Zach Hurtt will be a good addition to the loss of Stein at TE. But to be honest, I don't think it is going to affect the passing game too much. We have a couple of good recievers and TE's to move into those slots and I know the skill position players know how to get the job done under some pressure.

Did Hudy play any safety while he was also at QB his sr. year?

Yes, he played safety, but he was the backup quarterback and rarely played any QB while he was playing Safety.

Yea that was what I couldn't remember. I knew Hudy started a couple of games but I couldn't recall if he playes safety during those game. He would be the closest to a Highlands QB playing D unless Jared played some nose tackle his senior year.:D j/k

These two guys likewise have no varsity experience playing on the offensive line. Ball and Hurtt should remain defensive players only and Stein should be left at tight end. Dale's non belief in power backs is very evident when they play the better teams on their schedule and cannot get the tough yards down by the goal line and have to settle for field goals or attempted field goals.
