IMO anyone who is able to boot a computer, log on to the internet, and navigate around a message posting board, is intelligent enough to be able to type out a grammatically correct sentence that is coherent

January 27, 200422 yr I finally read through this thread all the way, and I'm still floored that people would get so uptight about being asked to do something so easy. It kind of reminds me of a holdover from the turn of the 20th century where those who were educated were treated with disdain and scorn simply because they were educated. Personally, it's an easy rule to follow for me, and I don't say that to sound condescending -- it's just a fact. My job requires it. It kills me that people can come to this country and learn our language from scratch in months, having never spoken anything other than their native tongue, and can master it better than people who have never set foot outside this state, let alone this country. There's no reason people should wear ignorance as a badge of honor. And it annoys me to see our language butchered -- probably why I started the "your v. you're" thread a bit back. Admittedly, I've thought of doing the same thing with several others: its v. it's their v. there v. they're apostrophes/contractions/possession/plural But I'll hold off. Thanks for having the rule in place.

Sometimes it is really hard to read posts when their aren't spaces every onces in a while.

You guys must've been reading my mind. I, on occasion can be quite long-winded (me? really?) and I have noticed that some of my longer ones can get a bit difficult for me to re-read. With that in mind, I'm trying to do better.

February 21, 200422 yr Paragraph separation is great, but the MOST IMPORTANT thing a poster can do to make sure his/her post is easy to read is to use correct capitalization and punctuation. I cannot tell you how many posts I've skipped over because there wasn't even a capital letter to begin the sentence, let alone any future sentences. The simplest punction mark of all, the period, is often omitted; no commas to separate phrases, and add misspelling, it becomes too hard to figure out! And, honestly, I not only rarely read posts that are posted in that manner, but I have a harder time giving fair consideration to the intent of the post. It seems that if a poster truely wants his/her thoughts to be taken seriously and the meaning understood, that they would take the time to ensure they are communicated correctly. Just a thought from an AR poster.
February 21, 200422 yr Run on sentences are bad enough to read. Run on paragraphs, the ones that run about 40 lines without a paragraph break, I usually skip altogether. :sleep:
