Flagg as we all surely know by now is just 18 and won't be 19 until December. He is an incredible talent and as good as any freshman in recent memory. He's still just 18 years old. Another year of maturing, working on his game and getting stronger would surely bode well for his NBA prospects long term. 

Rookie salary for this year's #1 pick will be $11.5 million for year one +/- 20% depending on how hard both sides negotiate. Years two and three increase about $500K per year. I'd be willing to say that Duke probably has some deep pocket donors and corporate partners that could get him to that year one rookie number, maybe even exceed it.

So any chance that Duke comes up with a $10,000,000+ offer for one more year? Secondly if they do is there any chance Flagg would take it and stay at Duke for another run at a title with the Boozers next year?

 

No way when you are the #1 pick why would you want 10 million when you can go make 5-10 times that.

Rookie salary is set. Year 1 tops out at around $13 million. Rookie contracts are for 4 years, so he's not getting 10 times that. 

He could legit make year 1 Rookie money while staying at Duke..

The only thing returning to Duke does negatively is that he couldn't become a free agent until one year later. He'd still only be around 23 and be on the market as a free agent if he chose to be.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back. He seems like that kind of player to me that wants to achieve the highest goal that he can of winning a championship

Absolutely no chance.

Zero reason for him to come back. You don’t chance coming back and getting some kind of bad injury or whatever. You just had an unbelievable year, and earned the right to be the top pick and get that guaranteed contract. Which honestly Duke’s coach should be like Cal in that situation and even tell him he isn’t even allowed back. As what is best for the player is to leave.

Yep. And if he were to come back to Duke and get injured, he might not even get the first big NBA contract. There's simply no good reason to return to Duke. Sure an NCAA title is nice, and he can absolutely make nice bank with an NIL deal. But neither is as good as being a high lottery pick in the NBA.

Google says Flagg was paid $4.8M this year, highest paid basketball player.

Highest paid athlete any sport is listed as Arch Manning, $6.5M.

I think $10M is a stretch.

He seems like a smart kid with his head screwed on straight.  No way he's at Duke next season.

Now that he's shown what he can do as the POY, I think he could easily get that number if he said that's what it would take to get him back.

FWIW I don't think he returns, but I feel there is a better chance that he'd return than most think.

Right. But you are talking NBA salary vs. NIL. It will now be NBA Salary + Endorsements vs. NIL. My guess is he will be making 2 to 3 times more money next season.

The only strategic move Flagg could make is that players can now pull their name out of the draft after the NBA draft lottery. Even at that, I would use the leverage to go where I want to play, not return to college.

Not happening announced today that is he is officially entering the NBA Draft.
