South Oldham 67 Danville Christian 44 (KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16®)

Featured Replies

Final a big win for South Oldham and in the win tied the record for most 3's in a state tournament game. The Dragons will take on Jeffersontown on Friday at 1:30pm in the quarterfinals.

I'm not surprised with the South Oldham win. But the margin of victory is surprising.  I thought the pace that South Oldham plays with, and the way that they spread teams out made them a tough matchup for DCA.  The Warriors wanted the game in the 40s or 50s.  They aren't really built to outscore teams if it gets above that.

Not surprised at this result.  Not a fan of DCA's slower style of play and figured they wouldn't put up enough points.

It was perfect to succeed in the 12th this year where defense was king and there were more post oriented offenses than usual. A team built like South Oldham that shoots like they did tonight - that DCA style stood absolute zero chances.

How did DCA win their Region?

12th region was really down and has been down the last few years.  Most games in region tourney were in the 30's-40's.

Steve Simpson!!!!!! What was this...his 8th, 8th Region Title at South Oldham? Now making the most of it, yet again, at Rupp.

Fourth title. Also won in 2013, 2014, and 2016. Lost in the first round to Hopkinsville in both 2013 and 2014. Beat Owensboro Catholic before losing to South Laurel in 2016.

All year I have often wondered why DCA didn’t try to speed the game up more with their defense. Maybe it was their lack of depth. I just thought they would try to press more and trap teams more with their length and athleticism.

Either way, congrats to DCA on a trip to Rupp! It will be interesting to see how their team forms next year without Boyd.

South Oldham and Ashland are the two best teams I’ve seen all season with high level ball movement and passing.  And both, handled DCA.  I think the bigger floor def. helped South as well.  The Miles kid was electric.  Great PG play.

I don’t think that was DCA’s best stuff either.  Sometimes you don’t play well on that stage.  Credit to South though.

So, little off ?

Defensive oriented region, as mentioned, down overall but down in two specific ways - no roster was extremely deep and there was a lack of serious three point threats. It is why Mercer and DCA were at the top of the region. Consequentially, I think Mercer also gets blown out in this game if South Oldham shoots the same way.

Also, the regional tournament overall was a slugfest with 3 of the 4 first round games going to double overtime. DCA had no cake walks throughout.

And it's not like they got hot at the right time - they came into the game at 29-3.  The two big kids are a puzzle.  I get the fact that they like to play slow, and once South got up they were done.  But those two bigs.....I don't see how they would be effective in a region that prefers grind it out games.  Grind it out sort of implies a tough physical style, and each of those two kids weighs around 140 I'm guessing (only slightly joking) and simply isn't built to withstand contact.  They each (or maybe it was just one more than the other) had multiple turnovers....slightest bit of contact, the ball is dropped and they're going the other way.

DCA definitely overachieved this year, but that game was not indicative of the team they had been all season. However, I will say they impressively went 29-3 with really only one guard (boyd) with any experience or ability to make a play at all. But in the end you got to have more than one guard to make a run at Rupp.

Ateny (15) played well this year. He was out of sorts vs SO, but that was more of an aberration. Ayiei was either really good or really bad. Wednesday night was the really bad! I will say Ayiei played thru illness, and Dadisman who arguably was third best player on team, played less than 2 mins due to stomach virus. Not sure it would have changed the end result, but that was a huge blow.
