Ateny (15) played well this year. He was out of sorts vs SO, but that was more of an aberration. Ayiei was either really good or really bad. Wednesday night was the really bad! I will say Ayiei played thru illness, and Dadisman who arguably was third best player on team, played less than 2 mins due to stomach virus. Not sure it would have changed the end result, but that was a huge blow.

I would add that very few teams would survive an onslaught of 3 point shooting like SO demonstrated in the 2nd quarter.  DCA was up one at the end of the first, despite several turnovers, and then South Oldham proceeded to hit 8 for 11 (73%).  Take away a couple of breakaways at the very end and the rest of the game was pretty much even.  South Oldham had great ball movement and shooting and their defense was good as well.  They are obviously a very well coached team.  It would have taken a lot to beat them but that second quarter was what clinched the deal.

Somewhere Steve Simpson is smiling at the thought of this.  Makes me think of Dean Smith.  He had been to 7 final fours before winning a title, and he finally won one in ‘82.  A reporter asked him how he felt after the game, and he said something like “I’m no better a coach now than I was yesterday.”  Meaning……luck is a part of it. What kind of kids/team do you have?  How strong is the competition?  What about injuries?  Last year, or maybe it was 2 years ago, Simpson took a lot of heat on this very forum.  A lot of comments that he wasn’t a very good coach, the game had passed him by, etc.  Suddenly he’s a genius again!  He wasn’t any worse coach then than he is now.  Fate happens to us all.

Steve Simpson, is the best coach in the 8th region.  He was the AD and and my JV basketball coach, 30 years ago at Grant County.  As far as I'm concerned he should still be at Grant County. When the late great coach Wenderoth retired he was passed over, he skipped town for Lincoln County.  I always thought it wouldn't take long for him to come back home, but he never did. South Oldham got it right.
