Bowling Green 52 Adair County 51 (OT) (KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16®)

Featured Replies

Hard to start the Sweet 16 better than that! Bowling Green led by as many as ten, but a furious rally saw Adair County have the ball and a chance to win it in regulation.  A Loy three and then tip in follow were no good, and it went to the extra session.  Deuce Bailey's layup with 9 seconds remaining proved to be the game winner and the Purples move forward to face the winner of Ashland and Calloway County.

Incredible game!  Tip of the cap to Adair!  Great season, team and coaching staff!

I had it at a one point game and that's where it played out.

BG just couldn't get in their comfort zone today, but give Adair credit for that.

Thought Braylon Banks was HUGE for BG!  But it will be a LONG time before Bowling Green has an impact athlete like Deuce Bailey!

GREAT Game!  Thanks to @DragonFire for the great updates!

No dog here but would like to see the clock stop in the last minute after baskets.

Nice win for the Purples and they avenge a loss from earlier in the season to Adair. Also if Ashland wins their game tonight they will get another opponent they have played in the regular season.

If I'm Adair County, I'm thinking back to two things.  The first, and much bigger, is what they did at the end of regulation.  You have the ball for the final 40 seconds of regulation.  You bleed the clock down to 3.5 seconds, but you do not get it down low for the timeout, instead having it up high.  That's in a tie game.  If you're going to have it up high, that timeout needs to come with about 8 seconds remaining to give yourself a better set.  Instead, they got a very contested three point attempt by Loy, and a tip in follow that, to be fair, nearly went.  But If was a very odd choice all around to me to play for that set.  Didn't get it.  Second, when Deuce Bailey hits his shot with just over 9 seconds left, Adair does not call timeout.  They're down 1, the ball get away from the inbounder, and there's now roughly about 6 seconds left before they inbound.  All they got was a long three that was again, quite contested.  Breeze takes two timeouts home with him.

Now, that said, it was an incredible comeback by Adair just to get to that point.  They put themselves in a position to win the game when at the beginning of the fourth, I thought they were pretty much dead.  Strong effort. Meanwhile, Bowling Green weathered the storm, and Deuce Bailey, a guy that really spent most of the season looking like he really wasn't interested in being there, he makes THE play with that game winner.  The lights came on for him in a big way when it hit the postseason.

I was very impressed with Adair County, great season!

However, I am a football guy and watching all those Bowling Green games over the years and seeing Deuce Bailey play so much had me rooting for the Purples and I admit I got vocal when Deuce scored the winning basket.

What a fantastic game to open the Sweet 16®!

Here's the play at the end of OT that push the Purples on to the next round!

Deuce Bailey - Incredible competitor!  Go Purples!

Most important shot in Adair history and Gilbert was the last guy who shoulda been taking it.  Never should have kept the timeouts in his back pocket.  Ball shouldn’t have been in anyone’s hands but Conor Loy.

Deuce Bailey is a dude! Congrats to the purps.

This one is at the end of regulation where the Indians could have won it.  But it doesn't fall and the game goes to OT.

I don't know anything about this team, so I'll defer to your judgment.  But I'm looking at the stats, and Gilbert leads the team in 3 point shooting at 45.4%, and is third on the team in scoring (Loy shoots 34.2% from 3).  That does't make it seem like he should have been "the last guy" taking the shot?

He's got to be in contention for BG's Mount Rushmore of multi-sport athletes, right? I know there's a lot of competition for those four spots, but he's making a compelling case.

He was also O for the day.  Should have called a TO and got it to Loy.  JMO.  Can’t complain though.  Breeze is best coach in Adair history.

Head scratching decisions from Breeze at the end of regulation and OT.  Milked the clock with 40 seconds left and then calls a timeout with only 3.5 seconds left to set up a play.  Then doesn't call a timeout after the Bailey layup with 8 seconds to go and goes home with 2 TO's in his pocket.

What a great game to open the tournament and proud of the mental toughness the Purples showed after giving up the lead.  Thought the egregious flagrant was the death nail but made enough plays to get over the hump! Bailey's shot will rightly get all of the plaudits, but I thought his defense on Loy all game was absolutely spectacular.  When the lights come on, Deuce always shows up. On to Friday morning!

This one didn't disappoint; congratulations Purples!

Contest picks split 12-10 for BG, so a double congrats for surviving . . .
