He was there for this year. Does he go to Shelby where he was an assistant? 

Carroll County moves up to 3A next year, joining a district with Bourbon County, Henry County, Lloyd Memorial, and Pendleton County (and leaving a district with Beechwood, but also several of their main rivals in other sports - Owen, Walton, Trimble). Has traditionally been a tough, but not impossible, place to win. They won first round playoff games in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Hearing it was to be closer to home and to be around his kids. He has a daughter playing high school ball and wants to be closer for her. Was told he was driving an hour to an hour and a half one way daily.

Speaking as someone who has lived this, sometimes you don’t realize what a drag the travel and time away is until you live it.

The week we played Carroll, I told our guys that who they saw on video was not who they would be playing because of the improvement they were making. Josh's guys played hard and I thought played their best game at that point against us, and that was without their starting QB. 

One of my young QBs is in their program. Zander Webb. Awful good young man and nice family as well.

I believe 3 of those playoff wins came when the current HC at Scott was there and then got run out. Before him Hunter Cantwell I believe was the HC. 
 

Things are tough in today’s game. Fewer guys get into coaching and/or stay in coaching. Guys are getting HC spots before they are ready and often aren’t given the time to grow (I’m have no idea if this is the case here). That also affects building a staff. Throw in the geography, the range of pay scales of teachers, and the expectations of parents/community and things can get rough. That’s not even getting into district/admin issues. 
 

Carroll is a strange place from the outside. They typically had good numbers with a good mix of kids. Facilities are pretty good. They appear to have community support. It’s a job you look at and wonder what’s the catch. 

Coach Smith would give you the shirt off his back and would do anything to help those around him, so I know the decision to step away after one season was a tough one. 

Kudos to him for prioritizing his family, and here’s to the best outcomes for all parties involved.

2 of the playoff wins was with Coach Franklin (2020 & 2021).  2018 was with Coach Cantwell who was there from 2016-2018.  The 2022 playoff win was with Coach Oldham.  When you look at it, the school has been able to attract quality head coaches, but the problem appears to be it's just not a permanent landing spot or one that is going to keep a HC for more than 3 or 4 years.  It's almost like an FCS school.  If you do poorly, you're shown the door, but if you do well, you're moving up to bigger jobs elsewhere.

In some ways their geography is both a blessing and a curse. Close enough to Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky to get good applicants but far enough away that anyone who has success wants to move to closer and/or bigger schools.
