Hearing it was to be closer to home and to be around his kids. He has a daughter playing high school ball and wants to be closer for her. Was told he was driving an hour to an hour and a half one way daily.

Being tied up in the car for an hour and a half after football practice and after off-season workouts can pretty well knock out any chances at making it to a high schooler's games "back home," so that totally makes sense that he's choosing family over coaching.

I've not ever heard anything but good things said about Josh Smith. Wish nothing but the best for him and his family.

First, let me say this about Coach Smith. Bright young Coach. I had the opportunity to watch the Anderson Co. game. He was way overmatched. But the team appeared to be playing hard he coached his butt

  • Coach Smith would give you the shirt off his back and would do anything to help those around him, so I know the decision to step away after one season was a tough one.  Kudos to him for prioritiz

Speaking as someone who has lived this, sometimes you don’t realize what a drag the travel and time away is until you live it.

So why take the job? You know what you’re signing up for.

This isn’t always true. This more of a general statement and not necessarily a thing with Carroll (this is why I’ve always wondered wants the catch.).

You might be told/promised a number of things and those things don’t happen. Things can change in a district due to any number of factors. It’s not as simple as knowing what you signed up for at times because what you sign up for and what you get could be very different.

The geography might help attract HC but it doesn’t help at all getting a staff. Outside of large population areas or possibly areas with a local college filling a staff can be extremely difficult. It’s getting harder and harder even in the larger population areas.

Generally speaking... not specific to Carroll...

On a scale of 1-10... when a new hire is made... the HFC 's level of interest and engagement is a 10. The bosses, about a 9.

Depending on where you are.... the number for the administration will begin to go down. Some places, faster than others. When the gap between the HFC and admin gets too big... it is time for the HFC to move on.

The number for the HFC can go down also. But, fortunately, for most of the guys in my circle and our coaching tree... we stay geeked up until the very last day we are the HFC. I had my Superintendent(not current) tell me one day, "Some times you can care too much." I took that as a compliment.

When you look at program and you use the word success I think it is subjective based on the location. If first round playoff win is considered success at Carroll then a HFC has to go in with realistic expectations. The program has not won a district championship in 40 years.

They have a strong young group of athletes in the younger classes. With the move to 3A and getting out of the District with Beechwood I could see some success trending upward.

Beechwood had only been in that district for the last 2 seasons. Previously the district champ has been Walton-Verona under Coach Barth. Before he got them rolling, Gallatin Co. won it and Owen Co. won it since 2011. KHSAA district records don’t go back that far. Prior to that Carroll and Owen were 2A, Walton-Verona, Gallatin were 1A. 1A did have Beechwood, while 2A group had CAL/ DeSales.

Carroll has an uphill battle, but the transition to 3A is promising for them. Lloyd Memorial, Henry Co., Bourbon Co., and Pendleton Co. will be tough competition. Lloyd will be the favorite early on. Right coach gets this job, could make some noise.

First, let me say this about Coach Smith. Bright young Coach. I had the opportunity to watch the Anderson Co. game. He was way overmatched. But the team appeared to be playing hard he coached his butt off because that is who he is. Knowing the guys who influenced him and his dad's influence, I can assure everyone that he went hard for Carroll Co. and the kids there.

Every coach who accepts a job has a vision and plan. They often think they can shuffle both family and coaching. Coaches pour much into other people's kids and never get enough credit for their efforts. Parents and fans focus so much on winning.

One thing I noticed on social media after his announcement was how parents commented that they hated seeing him go and the next statement about how much he meant to that community. I read one female soccer parent's comment on how he made every sporting event and supported all students, and that community had never had a football coach care for all sports. I am not 100% sure but sounds like to me the young man was doing something right.

...also as tell-tale it is time to GO!

Any word on this job?

Any word on this? We are getting danger close for HC’s to scramble as late hires. Getting hired in Mar-Apr time frame is miserable for incoming head coaches.

Word is interviews have concluded and the job was offered.
