Running as punishment; acceptable or abusive

Featured Replies

I would just like some opinions on running as punishment. Example, team does poorly in a game situation. Next practice coach runs them unmercifully until many are throwing up. No dribbling, or ball-handling just running.

This seems abusive to me, but would like others input.

Wow, is this really a question?

It builds discipline. let em run for a while and if someone can hit a couple free throws, they stop. Helps them to hit those shots down the stretch too.

Some teams , both good and bad can learn more from a practice without balls on the court! Kind of old school , been there.

Your coach must have made you or someone close to you run a LOT to join BGP and start your first thread with this question...

Welcome.

Running them is acceptable. I wish they could make some of the regular students run as punishment rather than a suspension/vacation day from school. I guarantee it would be more effective.

Often seen on cross-countey T-shirts:

"Our sport is your sport's punishment."

Welcome to the site fridaymorning.

This is a joke of a question. You can't handle it...sit in the stands and watch...

I'm all for conditioning, and running to get the point across when the team isn't 'getting it' can be a useful tool, but there is such a thing as too much.

Are you serious? Give me a break. I ran in high school and it didn't hurt me. ... What's next? a court order stopping running in practice?

I'm not a big fan of running when I do it. But back when I played sports it wasn't fun but it sure helped. When you are better conditioned then the team across from you, then you hold a huge advantage! You can keep going 100% in the 4th quarter or Overtime.

As a punishment, I love it. Not only does it teach you a lesson but it helps you being able to shoot and play when you're tired.

I think running for conditioning is great but running for punishment just plants a negitive in the mind when it comes to running!

It can be VERY effective if used correctly. However, it can be excessive but that is very, VERY rare IMO. One thing is for sure, he'll get the message across.

I guess it depends what they were running for, also...
