Running as punishment; acceptable or abusive

Featured Replies

I think running as "punishment" is fine, however, I don't think a coach is doing his team a service by just making them run. I have coached and whenever I had the team run they always did it in conjunction with another skill, usually ball handling. eg. dribble suicides, full court passing drills, or similar drills. Whenever we did drills I always wanted the team to be learning or enforcing at least two skills per drill.

Your coach must have made you or someone close to you run a LOT to join BGP and start your first thread with this question...

Welcome.

Running them is acceptable. I wish they could make some of the regular students run as punishment rather than a suspension/vacation day from school. I guarantee it would be more effective.

Thanks for the welcome,

Why don't they make "regular students" run as a form of discipline?

This is a joke of a question. You can't handle it...sit in the stands and watch...

I agree with you totally MysteriousOne!;)

fridaymorning I guess you hate getting up on Saturday morning to run!!!

Where would the line be, between punishment and abuse?

A lot of times you can have pukers before it would cross the line. Especially if the kids arent used to running that hard. There are a lot of variables to consider.

Exactly...

Physical hands on, verbal diatribe, belittlement, forcing contact....I could go on.

Coaching is more than x's and o's, its about eliminating mental mistakes, physical breakdown, fatigue, team unity, common goal, toughness, exceeding abilities....running as punishment, is extremely common and often makes the weak stronger, the stronger tougher and the quitters....quit.

Exactly. One of the reasons hard conditioning is done at the beginning.

we used to do our running while dribbling. It doesnt hurt one bit. I had greater respect for the coaches that i was conditioned at the end of the year and didnt struggle in another sport. I am for all sports to run and that includes cheerleaders which i have some family that works with. Discipline, respect, conditioning.

Running is a must in most sports the more the better. I know teams that run 20 or 30 sevens every day and it aint for punishment its just for being in good shape. Running for punishment is also normal for this same team after they get done with normal running. It is great for the body it learns you to GO ON through the pain shoot while tired and ive noticed this team is like the energizer bunny: they never quit digging and sometimes they go harder in the fourth than any of the rest!!!! Vote Yes for Running!!!!!!

Not acceptable. There needs to be some stairs involved as well!

....:scared: That brings back memories and add a 40lb vest, then you've nailed part of my conditioning....:D

Question to Fridaymorning, is this your sons first Varsity team?

So everybody that says running is acceptable in all cases, you believe that there is never a time when a coach might legitimately ask too much of the athlete?

There is a line that can be crossed when it comes to running. Especially in a sport like football. When your dealing with scorching heat and humidity along with all the equipment. That could become dangerous if you dont keep your cool as a coach.
