Open Job: Wayne County

Also from the Larry Vaught article:

Jeff Hoover was one of many fans that Woods has who was upset by the decision and didn’t hide his feelings on social media.

“If you want to call Wayne County Superintendent Don Neal and tell him what a stupid, selfish, petty, bone-headed decision he made to fire @coachrwoods, his number is (606) 348-8484. Personal vendetta to get rid of one of best high school coaches in Kentucky history. Unbelievable,” Hoover posted on X.  “Absolute travesty. @coachrwoods  is arguably the best high school coach in Kentucky. Guarantee you he’s Top 5 from any objectionable analysis.   Incredible. Folks in Wayne County will not be happy.  True basketball fans not happy.  I’m more than not happy.”

Super may not have received a favorable recommendation from search committee 10 years ago, due to issues that led to him being pulled out of the school he was in and move to bus garage to run transportation.

If half the stuff I've heard is true, he is just a vindictive little creep, that doesn't like being told no.

That makes you wonder how in the world he managed to still become superintendent. In that deep with the three board members? Did those three recognize the heat they’d bring on themselves?

So who are the candidates for this job.

Rodney Woods wouldn't take the job back if the same super is there, so let's talk candidates.

I hope Coach Woods lands at another 12 region school, builds a powerhouse program, and serves that Super of Wayne County an entire humble pie!

When you lose someone of that stature from your school, let alone an athletic program, it has DEEP repercussions that some shallow thinkers don’t take into consideration.

I’m sure there will be several people inquire. But I believe the current girls head coach has been getting groomed for this spot for a few years, Austin Shearer.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - For the last 38 years, Rodney Woods guided the Wayne County boys’ basketball program to unprecedented success in Monticello. However, that tenure came to a close Wednesday.

Woods was delivered a letter from the Wayne County superintendent that he would not lead the Cardinals onto the court next season.

Coach Woods says it didn’t come as a surprise.

“The rumors were rampant from the summer on, all year long, that it was going to happen, and people didn’t believe that. They thought it would be based on coaching, and I didn’t. I knew what would happen,” said Woods.

A coach of that magnitude get's let go for a decade long grudge. Things are gonna get a lot more messy than cleaner. I feel for coach woods after everything he's done for Wayne County Basketball and the community. Having won 22 district titles and made it to the state tournament on 9 different times.

Right, the new Super can win any battle but he is at risk of losing the war with this type of irresponsible decision.

Certainly sounded from Larry Vaught's article that Woods was pretty content to be retired, stay in Wayne County, and go watch Tennessee basketball. I can't see him going to another school, but if I had an opening I would most definitely call him.

Word is that Austin Shearer is not on the Super's good list either. Shearer was at some of the board meetings leading up to the hiring of Neal.  Shearer is also very loyal to Woods.  The rumor is that the hire was decided before the firing took place and the person is currently in the district.  He's never coached a high school boys game.

The scary thing is every rumor that had been floated has come true with this administration so far.

If that is true, I look for several current players to find a new team. Sad situation in Monticello. One man is ruining a great tradition.

How good is their football team?  I would think that if Dumphord considered it he’d look for a school with good football and basketball.  That might be a place like Somerset.
