What is this thing that apparently happened 10 years ago that the superintendent is mad over?

I sat next to some Wayne County parents at a game in February.  They were getting soundly beaten and the parents were openly critical of the coaching staff and some of the players.  I thought it was inappropriate at the time.  I’ve been around KY basketball enough to know that it was probably not reflective of how everyone with kids on the team felt.  It doesn’t take many people to stir things up though.  

I was at that game and I'm 99% sure I know which parents/family you are referring to.  They are good people that fully support Woods and staff.  They are guilty of sometimes vocalizing what they should probably keep to themselves but they support the team in a number of ways.  A person can be critical of in game decisions but still fully support a program.

I have seen some posts on social media blaming disgruntled parents/family and I can say with 100% confidence that this is simply not the case in this situation.  The overwhelming sentiment among the players is that next year they had a real shot at winning region and now that's been ripped from them.

Neal was in the running for superintendent 10 years ago and Woods' wife, Cynthia, was on that screening committee. Neal was not hired, Wayne Roberts was.  The plan was set in motion then to flip the board, fire Roberts and hire Neal.  It took 10 years but it they did it.  Roberts' contract was not renewed last summer much to the disappointment to everyone in the community.  Apparently, there were other disagreements over the years as well.

The entire story is in Larry Vaughts column this morning. It does not mention the non-tenured teachers who he was at odds with who he fired though. An exerpt from the column: 

So why was Woods not surprised he was fired? Simple. It seems Woods’ wife was on a superintendent search screening committee 10 years ago that did not recommend Neal, a principal in the Wayne system at the time, to be superintendent.

“He said then he would get me and he was hired as superintendent in August,” Woods said Wednesday. “He sent one of his assistants to my house today to tell me that my coaching duties had been terminated. Nobody is going to be able to talk to him or call him.”

My understanding is that pink slips used to be common for non-tenured teachers at Wayne much like other districts. They kind of got away from pink slips under Roberts but Neal brought them back.  I'm not sure if that is completely accurate or not but it came from a retired Wayne teacher.

The fact that one man has this much power, and doesn’t have to answer any questions about it is just not right. I hate it for Coach Woods, his players, and the entire Monticello community.

They're common in most school districts. 

I'd hate to try to go in and coach under these circumstances.  

I would assume Coach Austin Shearer will be the first call.

As someone posted earlier, same thing happened in Danville years ago.  Coach terminated and the super never gave any public statement outside of "Going in a different direction."  I feel bad for Wayne County because I've had something like this happen to my own team.

Talent-wise, if everyone stays put which is a big IF they're preseason 1 atleast top 3 in the region.  It will be interesting to see who applies.

An absolute travesty has occurred in the HS? coaching ranks. Wayne County coach Rodney Woods has been relieved of his duties. Pink-slipped by the new Superintendent. 38 years of winning and Coach Woods gets canned like this? Something is not right in Monticello!

Coach Woods is Wayne County and he is Wayne County basketball. That man has done more for that county, the county’s children, the county’s morale, and moral stance than anyone I can think of in just about any community in this state. 

I don’t know what else to say. I rarely get emotional about things out of my control, but this is a catastrophic error by the new superintendent of Wayne County schools Donnie Neal.

I have already heard from a dozen people, some of them former coaches, who all say the exact same thing. This is a revenge tour, which has been a decade in the making.
