If Cal was as good as a lot of people think then he would make adjustments when needed, but his ego is so big he hasn’t and probably never will, so, we’re stuck!!

Everyone is saying how much the defense is getting even worse lately. Give anyone one guess why.

It has to do with who isn't playing and who is now getting a lot more minutes (2 guys).

This may be the dumbest defensive team I have ever seen.

Opponents run the same sets over and over. The players don't recognize what is happening and make the same mistakes over and over. The players own that. None of us need any coach telling us to stop the open man under the basket. Yet every game UK players let an open man go right past them in the paint and get open layups - uncontested.

Last night TN ran a high screen 30 feet from the basket many, many times and our guards kept getting hung on the pick, and our big men never stepped in front of Ziegler on straight line drives to the basket.

Hand checking is clearly allowed now. Teams grab and hold UK players game after game. UK defenders won't touch a player and won't put their body in front of a straight line drive. 

This team is soft. They are getting out physicaled every game. That is the game plan against UK. My message to UK before the next game is who is going to be the first player to get a flagrant? Grab, hold, push - this is a fight. That team is stealing your destiny. They are going to beat you up and steal your dream. Are you going to fight back or let them bully you? Play of the night for me was Bradshaw mixing it up. UK needs more of that. And did you see what the refs did after that? Started calling more fouls on grabs and holds and swats at the ball. UK needs to get tough and fight back. And UK needs to play man defense to do all that. 

Last, this team will get back on track when the big men get it going. They are the ones who can set a physical tone. They need to control the paint on both ends. I want some plays on offense pounding the ball inside. Everything will work so much better on offense and defense when/if we can get that from the big men.

 

Poor Bradshaw. He made consecutive good defensive plays and one gets tapped back in before the shot clock goes off, the other is rebounded by a crashing Vols’ player.

But he is really trying. Effort is not an issue with him. And he is playing more physical, but he is a kid playing against men.

Last night is a great example of why Reed is absolutely NOT the answer at PG. 

He is a perfect case of if he weren’t a local kid, nobody would any him on the floor. He simply is not athletic enough, nor does he have the killer instinct to play PG at a high level. Insinuating he should play over Wagner is an attempt to stir the pot, period.

Reed averages 1.6 turnovers per game.  He's had 3 turnovers in each of the 3 games that Wagner didn't play.  Still not awful, but turnovers haven't decreased with him starting point.

Nor have the wins.  It is not coincidental that this team is 0-3 when Wagner doesn't play.  With all 3 losses coming at home.

He's so much better than I ever expected he would be.  I'm tickled he's been so good because I love the Kentucky kids.  He can, I think, spell Wagner and provide limited PG minutes.  But he can't log a bunch of minutes at the point.  And while Wagner has flaws in his game, he's the only true point guard on this team.
