The NFL draft is meant to bring in younger talent on a yearly basis.  When I took at who the Bengals released, I wasn't really shocked by the list.  I think they may look to sign one or more players that other teams released to get back some of that experience you mention.  The whole process gives perspective of why players "hold out" to try to get their money early because time is not usually one's friend for a football athlete.  If there is a hint that a player has lost a step or two or their skills/mental edge, there is always someone in the wings to replace them.

Solid points.  Obvious salary constraints on the bulk of the roster has to take place as the league has transitioned to huge “star” pay absorbing large %s of total payroll.  Just wondering if this heavy rookie move opens some money for early visit of Chase negotiations?

At first blush I was like good job Bengals draft department.  But then as I thought about it a little more like you I am a bit skeptical.

That's right, Chase wants to beat Jefferson's deal by a single cent, so it appears that a four-year extension worth $140,000,000.01 will get the job done. Chase and Jefferson were former teammates at LSU, so it's not a huge surprise that the Bengals receiver wants to top his buddy.

I don’t think much of it. Was there any player that they released that stood out that believed should have kept?

I wonder about a new contract making zero economic sense. The way I understand it, the Bengals could give Chase a 4 year contract extension. So the deal will be a 6 year deal with 4 years added onto his current contract that has 2 years left. Does that spread the salary cap hit? Give him the $140M and the up front bonus money. These salaries go up every year. If they can spread the money over 6 years to help with the salary cap then that sounds good to me.

Hold-in getting ugly.  Not much public support for Chase’s strategy except ESPN which continues to call the Bengals, Cheapanati.

Mike has definitely earned that moniker.

I guess the part I'm missing from a BFO standpoint is, if I sign him now (2 years early), I can look him in at around $35,000,000 per year through 2029, because I'm not ripping up the current contract, I'm just extending.  If I wait just 1 more year to extend him, what's that yearly per figure?  $40,000,000? $45,000,000?  Wouldn't/Couldn't the BFO be saving money by extending JC now as opposed to next offseason?

ESPN is now reporting that the guaranteed money is the issue.  Whether accurate(?) or not(?) they reported Brown made an exception for Burrow and a 2nd exception would create a norm he’s not prepared to live with.  Extending Chase for 4 years with a fully guaranteed salary would put him under contract for 6 years which is creates a lot of injury exposure for a very high risk position like WR.

Podcast I watched said that they could spread the cap hit out over all 6 years if they sign him now
