We now know that Joe Burrow is a member of the Strangers from the movie "Knowing".

The Bengals signed 3 free agents today - CB Nate Brooks, WR Hakeem Butler and P Ryan Rehkow.

The Butler signing is interesting to me since he was the USL offensive player of the year.

 

This is starting to get a little concerning in my opinion with today making the 5th day of practice that JA'Marr Chase has missed. This needs to be done this week, I think.

While I would much rather them get him signed and get it over with. I am also not that concerned, because Chase is still there every day. He is in every meeting, he is around his teammates, etc. So this isn’t like a holdout where he isn’t even there. If he wasn’t showing up at all, then I would be more concerned. 

Granted I don’t know the particulars on the NFL gyrations with salaries, guarantees, and contract length; however, with the impasse on Chase’s contract extension I suspect Brown’s strategy is clearly:  1).  With the high injury rate of the WR position we are going to bet major injury will happen.  If we are lucky it will not and we will designate him as our franchise player for 2025 season.  The economics speak clearly ……$5M(?) salary for 2024 and franchise player for 2025 of guessing $25M totaling $30M for next two years with no future guarantees.  Comparatively horrible deal for Chase, but relationships and loyalty aside a great deal for the Bengals.  2).  WR position is historically at its height as a premium valued position.  With a healthy Joe Burrow we can still be good (note not great) with a cadre of solid WRs on cheaper rookie deals.

I will be delightfully shocked if Higgins is on the roster in 2025 and Chase in 2026.

Thanks.  Now I hope I’m wrong, but no way Mike Brown going to redo this contract with 2 years locked up.  Just re-emphasizes the point that the high injury prone WR position is a major risk for guaranteed money and long contracts.  I don’t see Brown getting caught up in the trend despite Chase’s talent, loyalty and proven performance.  Please prove me wrong, Mike.

Chase contract for 2024 is $1M salary, $3.8M roster bonus.  2025 is $21.8 for a two year total of roughly $25.6M.  Versus extending with guarantees, extension bonuses (actual cash outlays and escrows) all which would get into Mike’s pocket for a minimum of $60M++++++++ for just next two years and beyond.  Nah!  Not going to happen.

I will say the same thing I said when some worried if the Bengals would be able to pay Burrow with these crazy high QB contracts. While Mike Brown may at times not be willing to pay certain positions. Mike Brown has always been willing to pay franchise QBs, and number 1 WRs. 
 

Now he may make Chase wait until after this season, so he can get one more cheap year for Chase. However, imo there is zero to worry about in regards on if Brown will eventually lock him up long term. Paying franchise QBs and number 1 WRs is something Mike Brown has always done. Paying a number 2 WR is a different story and is why Higgins is probably done after this year.

Time for everyone to wake up and realize this isn't Mike Brown's team anymore, and hasn't been for several years. The cheap team take is done. Doesn't apply anymore. If there was any doubt at all, I thought Burrow's contract ended that view once and for all, but old beliefs die hard.

Look at what the Bengals have done in the free agent pool for the last several years. The Bengals are paying people and bringing in free agents who can choose any team. The Chiefs let Tyreek Hill go. The Bengals signed Orlando Brown away from the Chiefs. Are the Chiefs cheap? The Bengals signed top free agent safety Geno Stone away from the Ravens. Are the Ravens cheap? They are cheaper than the Bengals in those cases. 

It's over people. Cheap DOES NOT APPLY to the Bengals! Join the new era of the Bengals that has been in motion for arguably a decade, maybe even more.

Now with the Burrow contract, the Bengals are getting to the tough payroll decision position. Just like the Chiefs, Ravens, et al, you can't sign every top player. Good players like Higgins will not be signed. But it won't be because the Bengals are cheap.

Whose is it then I went and googled and ask that he is the president and it is true that is daughter and son-in-law handle a lot of day to day operations but what I saw he has final say on who is paid and how much. He knew if he failed to give Burrow a huge contract he would have been run out of town and been the laughing stock of the national media.

So is everyone saying that Chase is just going to sit all preseason and not participate at all and then just start playing when the season begins. If so what has he actually accomplished? If that is what happens I hope he don't end up with a soft tissue injury going from just conditioning on his own and then in live game sustain an injury. That is one thing I would 100% be glad to be wrong on.

The Mike Brown is cheap narrative started in the 90s, and many people see right on that. However, rather it is he or whoever has the final say. I’m not sure how people can act like the Bengals are still cheap and won’t pay. I’m not sure what else the Bengals have to do for people to realize most of the old narratives isn’t true anymore and hasn’t been in awhile. The Bengals in regards to paying or not paying people have been similar to basically everyone else these days. Even with the Burrow situation he didn’t pay because of being afraid of getting run out of town if he didn’t. Franchise QBs he always been fine with paying, even during his cheap years narrative. Same with number 1 WRs. 
 

Even in regards to the Chase situation. The Bengals are in a win now mood, so it’s not exactly bad business to try to get one more cheap year on Chase before having to pay him over 30 million a year, and having to lose others when that happens. Which obviously there isn’t to much bad blood or tension there considering Chase is still there every day, in all meetings, etc. 

With that said I do agree it would be nice to get him on the field soon, so he can get true football reps and shape.
