I thought I would take some time now that the season has come to another (IMO) disappointing end. I know a few on here thank that Coach Stoops is a great coach and has done an exceptional job. While a lot of people think he has not been all that good or that he has done a lot of good for improving the program but has done all that he can do. ( I fall into the latter). 

I thought I would take a deeper drive into Coach Stoops 11 year tenure at Kentucky and look at the numbers. I had my own idea about the numbers being a little inflated by the non-conference opponents, but I was even surprised at the numbers once you look into the wins and the teams they were against. Here below is the breakdown of the 11 seasons.

2013- 2-10 (both wins vs. FCS or old 1-AA)

2014- 5-7 (3 of the 5 wins vs. FCS) The 2 SEC wins were against Vandy & South Carolina.

2015- 5-7 (3 of 5 wins vs. FCS) The 2 SEC wins were against Vandy & Missouri.

2016- 7-6 (2 of 7 wins vs. FCS and 1 of the 6 losses was vs. an FCS team) Won 4 SEC games against South Carolina, Vandy, Missouri and Miss. State. (none had a winning record in league or regular season).

2017- 7-6 (3 of 7 wins vs. FCS) Won 4 SEC games vs. South Carolina, Missouri, Vandy, and Tennessee. Only South Carolina and Missouri had winning league and regular season records.

2018- 10-3 (3 of 10 wins vs. FCS) Won 5 SEC games vs. Florida, S.C., Miss. State, Vandy, Missouri. Florida, South Carolina, Miss. State & Missouri had .500 or      above league and regular season records.

2019- 8-5 (3 of 8 wins vs. FCS) Won 3 SEC games vs. Vandy, Arkansas, & Missouri. None had a .500 or above league record. Only Missouri had .500 regular season record.

2020-5-6 Only SEC games due to Covid. KY had 4 SEC wins vs. Miss. State, Tennessee, Vandy and S.C. None of those 4 teams had a .500 or above SEC or regular season record.

2021-10-3 (3 of 10 wins vs. FCS) Won 5 SEC games vs. Missouri, S.C., Florida, LSU, & Vandy. None of those 5 teams had a .500 or above SEC record and only South Carolina had a .500 regular season record or better.

2022-7-6 (3 of 7 wins vs. FCS) Won 3 SEC games vs. Florida, Miss. State, & Missouri. Only Miss. State had a .500 or better SEC and regular season records.

* Only 8 of the 35 SEC wins were vs. teams that finished at .500 or higher in the regular season or final records. That is only 23%.

 

I'd be very interested to hear what others think about the numbers when looked at a little closer.

 

He gets a one year extension for every year he wins 7-9 games, so continue to look for schedules front loaded with cupcakes.  UK fans are stuck with it.

The MAC is not FCS. They are Group of 5 FBS.

Your numbers are way off concerning the FCS wins: 

2013 the win against Alabama St was an FCS win, the win against Miami, OH was an FBS win. 

2014 only the Tennessee Martin win was against an FCS team. Ohio, Louisiana-Monroe, Vanderbilt and South Carolina were all FBS wins. 

2015 only EKU was an FCS team.  Louisiana-Lafayette, South Carolina, Missouri and Charlotte were all FBS teams. 

2016 only Austin Peay was an FCS team.  New Mexico State, Louisville, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Missouri were all FBS teams. 

2017 only EKU was an FCS team.  Southern Mississippi, South Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee and Vanderbilt were all FBS teams. 

2018 only Murray State was an FCS team.  Central Michigan, Florida, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Middle Tennessee, Louisville and Penn State were all FBS teams. 

2019 only UT-Martin was an FCS team.  Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Arkansas, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Virginia Tech were all FBS teams. 

2020 no FCS teams.  All games were against SEC teams except the win against NC State in the bowl game. 

2021 only Chattanooga was an FCS team. Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri, South Carolina, Florida, LSU, Vanderbilt, Louisville, and Iowa were all FBS teams. 

2022 only Youngstown State was an FCS team. Miami(OH), Florida, Northern Illinois, Mississippi State, Missouri, and Louisville were all FBS teams. 

2023 only EKU was an FCS team.  Ball State, Akron, Vanderbilt, Florida, Mississippi State and Louiville were all FBS teams. 

 

So in his tenure, 10 wins have come against FCS teams, not 28.  That's 13.6% of his wins, not 38.3%.

They have 3 of those type games (4 if you count Louisville), I wouldn't call 3 out of 12 games, loaded.

Yes that is true and my error but I guess you could say after I go back all of those 28 wins were from schools who conferences ranked 9th, 10th, or worse in each of the 11 seasons. I know all schools play those weaker schools.

The big stat for me of his tenure is that of Stoops 35 SEC wins only 6 of those have been against schools that finished with a .500 conference record and not much better is that of the 35 SEC wins only 8 of those schools had a .500 or better record for the season. Also, that 23% of all SEC wins have been against Vandy and 20% vs. South Carolina. So together almost half of all of his SEC wins 43% have been vs. those two schools.

If you don’t like Stoops just come right out and say it, don’t skew the numbers to try and prove your dislike for him.

I messed up by calling MAC and Sun Belt FBS but I don't think many on here consider any of those non-conference games against good competition. For example this years non-conference games vs. schools not in the power 5 were 11-24. The combined record of the 7 wins was only 33-52.

What can you say about 15 of 35 wins were only Vandy and South Carolina and only 6 of the 35 wins were vs. SEC teams that finished the season with a .500 or winning record in the league and only 8 had a .500 or winning season. I guess you are happy with beating MAC teams that most years don't even have a .500 or winning record then you will be happy. We saw what happen when the fan base at Texas A&M heard they were offering him the job. We have to many that are happy with most years having 40%+ of our wins against MAC or weak Sun Belt teams then you should be happy. With the SEC schedule going forward I guess 7-6 will be pretty good.

I will continue my support of Ky football and you can continue to be whatever you would like. Go Cats!!

Stoops has elevated Kentucky Football far beyond where it was when he took over, there really is no debating that. He has raised the floor of UK Football by a significant amount. 

That being said, you know what you're going to get from him at this point. 6-6 to 8-4 most years, consistently in a bowl (even if most of them are in Nashville), and every handful of years you'll get a 9 win season with a better bowl game. 

What's the alternative? Basketball is king at UK, so no "big name" coach is coming there for football. I'm not aware of any UK grads that are in the coaching ranks anywhere close to leading a D1 football program, so your best bet would be taking a chance on a young, enthusiastic coordinator. That has its obvious challenges. The additions to the SEC and the doing away of divisions aren't going to make matters any easier for UK. 

Mark Stoops will be the coach at UK for as long as he wants to be. Barring a stretch of multiple losing seasons, UK will never fire him. Based on him having two feet out the door to A&M, I'd imagine he will leave long before there's any real chance of UK cutting ties with him.

I agree with most of your post.    But Neal Brown at WVU and Jon Sumrall at Tulane are  head coaches and UK grads.   There may be others....I don't know.

I forgot about Neal Brown. I'm not as familiar with Sumrall, but the name sounds familiar.

I’m just saying I definitely don’t think that anyone could do a better job, or it would be surprising to me.
