What were the Phoebus excuse(s)?

Phoebus is a powerhouse but that’s unbelievable

If my math is correct they scored every 31/2 minutes in the first half. Wow.

Phoebus is another name for the Greek god Apollo. Maybe going against a one of the pantheon of Olympus was just too much for the early English settlers.

There's some more info about the game. Apparently the coach gave in to the team and crowd begging him to run up the score and go for 100 points. Threw a TD pass with time basically over to chase the points. I'd like to think there is some discussion going on about what sportsmanship is.

You'd think the refs would have slowed the pace of play enough, along with a running clock, to keep it from getting that out of hand.

I watched the video on Social Media of the last two plays.  Disgusting.  The final play was a long pass.  Just Disgusting is all I can say.

The Phoebus coach's comments trying to explain his actions in the press make his decisions look worse, not better.  If you believe him, he had so little character that he "gave in" to a classless act he knew was classless because the kids wanted it. So he made the decision but is blaming the players.

Does anyone remember Dixie Heights putting 100 on Newport in 1969? Dixie threw for a touchdown to get their final score in the 4th quarter.

Reads like those Dixie Heights Little Colonels didn't mess around.

I remember this. Used to walk to Red Colonels games as a kid. HCs Charlie Fugit and Dave Browning had some excellent teams in the late 60s and early 70s. Some "epic" AA playoff games with Bryan Station were played back in the day.

If I remember correctly, Newport hung some big numbers on a few teams in the same time frame. There should be some other high scoring games vs. the Wildcats too - maybe Highlands, Cov Cath ...

No excuse for this being done at the high school level anywhere. If capable, I would highly discipline any high school football coach for this anywhere, if not fire them.

I played in that game, I was a freshmen for Newport and my brother threw me a touchdown.
