Apollo (0-3) at Bowling Green (1-2)

The Apollo Eagles will head down the old Nather Parkway to take on the Purples for the 17th time in the series that dates back to 1975.  The Eagles defeated the Purples in back-to-back meetings in 1983 (20-14) and 1984 (12-11).  But the other 14 games, BG has come out on top.  Their most recent matchup was the 2015 Quarterfinal (50-7 BG).

Eagles Coach John Edge is a good coach who has been around for some time (he coached OCath for many years too), but the going has been tough since coming to Apollo in the Covid Year of 2020.  And this year has shown to again be tough losing the first 3 games of the season to good teams (vs OCath, McCracken County, and Meade County).  The Eagles are led by QB John Edge (I assume Coach Edge’s son), RB Niles Board and LB Eli Masterson.

The Purples will get the chance to come home and play a game on their home field (Rafferty’s Bowl game was in Bowling Green, but at WKU’s field).  It will be a nice homecoming for BG after a really tough opening 3 games vs tough competition (LCA, at Owensboro and vs Bryan Station in Lexington).

BG limps home with another gut-wrenching loss falling 38-35 to a better than their record says Bryan Station team in Lexington (LCA field).  The Purples had alot of new starters on the defensive side of the ball and although it wasn't pretty, they played their hearts out and made a memorable goal line stand with the game tied at 35.  But on the next possession, the Purples offense simply didn't get it done and allowed for Station to attempt and connect on a 40-yard FG with 4 seconds to play.  Needless to say, it will be good to get a home game to get back on track in many ways.

Who do you think wins this game?

This game is very much needed for BG.  Hopefully get some more experience on the defensive side and get the starters out as soon as they can to nurse some injuries.  I predict running clock before halftime for BG.

Even with the addition of coach Edge the Eagles still seem to struggle year in and out. Give me the purples big.

It's a shame too. We all know the guy can coach football. Parents won't let him do his job.

Edge a great coach.  He did beat Ocath 2 in a row, Henderson and a couple of other wins they don’t normally get at Apollo.  I think Apollo will compete early but just too much to rebuild and you are playing a hornets nest in BG.  49-7 BG.

How so? Parents in the mix is sometimes an indicator of weak admin support. AD Crume is behind him, right? Academic side too?

Lightning struck twice recently at Apollo -  Coach Edge and Coach Hawkins before him.

Don't know what parents are thinking. If Edge had not come back to the O'boro area who better did they think was/is coming to coach the Eagles.

Parents impact their players. When they're constantly telling the kids that coaches are making the wrong decisions, screaming from the stands that the wrong plays are being called, etc; they're undermining the guy that's actually accomplished and won something. Admin cannot control what goes on in the car on the way home from games.

I think lightening struck a third time in securing Jody Ashby as well. I worked with an ER physician who played under him at Castle in Evansville. I'm not sure what role he's playing on the sidelines this year, but he was the S&C coach last year.

Edge will be out this game too. When coaches get ejected they are serve a two game suspension. Not going to be easy for the Eagles this week.

Be a rough night for the Eagles.  Burns falling on hard times over the past decade has really hampered Apollo across the board.  Not just football but basketball too.  A lot of the strong College View talent went to DC over the past handful of years but Apollo did land Max Johnson and some kids that played with him.  As a freshman at QB, he looks to be the real deal and can hopefully be someone who can help elevate that program with Coach Edge.  In the meantime, its an uphill battle for Apollo Football.

Both teams score on their first drives 7-7 with 4:59 in the 1st
