Think about this, Mayfields second team receivers caught touchdown passes against Graves County...the game could have been worse if the first team receivers had of been used more or the 1st played more. All this tells us is that Mayfield has plenty of depth especially at receiver...

With the success and win total of the Mayfield program, why did it take so long (relatively speaking) for them just to reach their first state final?

Look at all the state championship and runner ups Mayfield has compared to PT and then to win 17 straight. It's still hard to believe this has even happened. MAYFIELDis about state championship nothing else matters but they will take another win against PT...PT had better win this year but that was said last year. All the pressure is on them and we know pressure can sometimes bursts pipes. Just hoping for a nice game tonight....

Settle down Francis. Did you even read my question? Probably not because you are to insane about PT. The question was simply looking at the win total for Mayfield, 4th in the country. Why did it take them until 1976 to make the state finals?

If I’m not mistaken, I remember my uncle telling me that back in the day only 1 team made the playoffs per district . Tilghman and Mayfield used to play on Thanksgiving. Winner of the district got in. Others went home. The setup was different back then …And The Cards are actually #3 Nationally

Oh yeah a school with 500 kids should be scheduling and beating schools with 2,000 kids every year. Makes sense. Mayfield has always played up. You will never see them schedule a school in their class or below it. And yet they still have the third most wins all time nationally. Pretty impressive no matter how you try to discredit it.

The way I understand it is that until 1975 there were only 3 classes in Kentucky football. 3A was all Louisville schools. 1A was all the tiny schools. And then you had Mayfield in 2A with all the remaining schools in the state. I would venture to say that Mayfield was definitely one of, if not the smallest 2A school in the state back then so it was definitely an uphill battle. Once they went to 4 classes in 1975 it evened things out a bit and that's when you start to see the success that Mayfield has had since. They have been to 25 state title games in the 47 years since 1976.

Of course I knew about the classification set-up but just never put 2 and 2 together. Thanks for the input. Since I am asking what schools were keeping Mayfield from the finals in those days. We don't hear alot about Western Ky football besides the Cardinals, in these parts.

P.S. I love the true hatred the schools seem to have for each other, that's what are rivalries are suppossed to be like.

well, we have to play all the slack schools in western Ky like Paducah. would be nice if some of the bigger schools in west ky would play UP to Mayfield's level that way we wouldn't be having these conversations. I would be ashamed being a 4A,5A,or 6A school and get my tail whipped every year by once a 1A now 2A team. what is Mayfield supposed to do drive 4 hours every Friday to play the bigger, better schools?  at least mayfield doesn't have to pay for our players like PT did. must be nice to have a rich booster ?

I think Bowling Green, Paducah, Owensboro, Madisonville and Hopkinsville  were all pretty good back then and we played most of them year in and year out.
