What is your school's process in hiring a head coach?

I was told by a head coach that when a school does a big hiring committee it is a red flag.  If you have a committee made up of parents and community members then whoever gets the job may not be who two of the members wanted so before you have coached a game two influential people of the program already don't like you.  I say influential because if they weren't then they wouldn't serve on the committee.  Personally I believe that the only people who should conduct the interviews are the school Superintend, Principal, and AD.  You can form a committee to gather names of candidates but that should be the only involvement.

I'm with you but I also think an expert in the particular sport should be included. If it is for Varsity Girls basketball, maybe have the boys coach on the committee. If it is golf, then maybe the local guy from the country club. Football might be a little more complicated. Maybe find a former coach that is retired to serve on the hiring team.

  • With Mason (96) and Mercer (15) it was a committee lead the by the AD. The Superintendent worked through the AD. In a private school interview, it was AD, HS Principal, and incoming AD.  Those 3

  • I’m not sure what the process was, but Highland’s process was flawed. For sure  initially. And personally still think they hired the wrong guy for Highlands after the initial mistake. That doesn’t mea

Thank you guys, but I’m aware of that fact.  I was just curious how different schools handled the search and hiring process.  How much input did others have on the recommendations given, and who those folks are that are giving the recommendations?  Does the elite schools do it different than the lower level schools?

Probably depends quite a bit on whether the school/administration already has an idea of who they want to hire.

I can get on board with that.  There needs to be somebody in the room with coaching experience who knows the right people to call to get an honest judgement on how good of a coach the person is.  Trust me good recommendations are given to get bad coaches to leave places lol.

I can see what you mean; the AD, principal and super have a vested interest in a head coach's success.  A committee has people that can complain and not look bad in the process.

Bringin' THA HEAT!!! Tell us how you really feel, LOL. Love the honesty.

No heat. Just could’ve been a homerun hire with a homegrown younger guy who played for Mueller. That’s what’s needed imo.

I think most schools use those three, but a big private schools have committees because of their money influences. The Booster Club President or maybe a trustee would want to have a say in this process.

A booster club should not have a say in hiring the next coach, imo.

Think of who provides the oversight and accountability to that teacher/coach: the principal and the AD. The only people who matter are the people who the teacher/coach will report to. The superintendent should not even be involved unless the football coach reports directly to him.

The rest are just distractions and embolden people (or worse, enrage people) to think they are more important to the program than they really are. If your coach is evaluated and held accountable by the boosters, then your boosters have exceeded their purpose and mandate. Coaches coach, boosters boost.

I guarantee you most of the private schools have a big donor or booster club guy on the comimttee. Do they actually get a say.... Who knows?? They are on the "committee" so the Super, Principal and AD can say "hey you were part of the hiring process."

So how does one get on these committees?

Outside of being an administrator, teacher or coach, I don't know the answer to your question.

My understanding is one committee member wanted hs head coaching experience over a college coordinator’s experience and was insistent on it. It swayed the committee and the right coach got away. Hopefully he won’t be involved if there’s any future committees.

You're spot on. It's my understanding there are quiet a few former players that played under Dale building their resume's to get a shot after this regime moves on.

This is the best way.

Committee brings names to AD, Principal and Superintendent.

As stated in quote, the more people involved leads to more people unhappy with the hire. Committees just make unimportant people feel important. And then ticked off when their guy/girl didn’t get the job.

I’m pretty sure there were MANY important people at St X that DIDN’T want Coach Wallace because he wasn’t an “X man”.

I think the last hire at Trinity went like this:

They gathered up the players and asked,

"Who's the nicest coach on staff that doesn't yell too much and doesn't push you too hard?"

As a Belfry fan I honestly have no way to know the answer to this. HAHA

Their last hire started with sending out a passenger pigeon!
