Is there a potential issue at Highlands?!? I’ve heard of at least one incoming freshman opting  out to go to Cov Cath and a slew of potential others looking elsewhere.  Anyone in the know care to comment?  If there’s smoke and all….

Care to elaborate a little more?  What is the “problem”?  I have my thoughts but want to hear it from others first.

My advice to players is do what you want to do. Do not let any coach tell you that you have to choose one sport over another. Trust me - if you are good enough to play, you will play. Above all else,

  • Right but you have to get back to being pretty good before you can jump into the best arena.

  • Just saw on Twitter Benke with another offer, nice job big guy!

Just know of at least one talented freshman to be that will be a Colonel.  Hearing of others exploring their options.  I’m looking for information as I don’t remember this type of thing happening in the past.

Is it isolated to one kid/family or are things beginning to spiral?  Can’t lose in-district talent.  DEFINITELY can’t lose in-district talent to Park Hills.

Some kids love to compete.

Some kids do not.

It is a Fight or Flight mentality and no kid should expect to climb a depth chart just because he thinks he should.

It has to be earned.

Good luck to the young man but these stories all end the same way.

I don't disagree with any of this, 100% accurate, and I love it.

But I also strongly disagree with making false promises to kids, which we all know happens, AND assistant coaches/adults calling out 14 year olds on twitter.  Not by name, but everyone knows who they are talking about, not a good look.

I hope all works out for these young men.  Go birds!!!

Idiotic for any coach at any level to call out players on a social media platform. If true, and I'm an administrator at HHS, I'm looking into this.

I’ve been told two will be going to NewCath and the one is going to CovCath. But as far as players quitting after freshman year, it happens at every school all the time. Some kids have the patience to wait their turn and some don’t want to get pounded on in practice for three years to get their turn. I was one that got destroyed at practice for two years but I also loved football and the contact.

As far a coaches calling out players for quitting on social media that’s asinine and needs to be addressed asap.

If kids want to quit then they have that right. It's just sad to see kids have to make a decision to be a one sport athlete because sports go year round. Hate hearing kids quitting the football program because it's something special to be part of. Even though lately it hasn't been what it was prior to 2014 but it's getting back. If you have been going to games the last few seasons you are seeing an improvement. Heck, this year at the spring game the offensive line looks bigger then years past. The kids just look bigger and  and stronger and have a swagger about them. Definitely a lot of confidence in those players. A lot of energy to win and bring this historical program back.

Is there evidence of coaches calling out players on social media? That is flat out unexceptable. No one is bigger than the program itself. For someone/ coach to go after a kid for a hard decision that hopefully they made and weren't swayed by a parent or coach is not very professional. Every program and coaching staff should have the professionalism not to create controversy.

Spiral out of control.... That's what happened starting in 2016 thru the 2020 season. More kids were quiting and transferring to other schools to be a star... Hergott to Beechwood and Shear to Simon Kenton for example. Two very talented QBs.

Is this something that will be horrible for the program with a slew of others looking elsewhere? Still see a lot of potential and talent on that field. Going to some practices along with the spring game there is a different swagger. Not sure why no one would want to be part of that. But the whole phrase that their is no "I" in team has some huge value.

Shearer moved to Independence.

I guess I'd prefer wins over swagger at this point. Not sure anyone fears playing the Birds anymore. Hopefully that changes.

There was a tweet by an assistant coach.  It did not specifically name any players.  It came out hours after the young man transferred to Cov Cath.  It was directed and poignant.

I don’t think anyone disagrees with the content of the tweet, but subject and timing of the tweet were calculated and uncalled for.

I’m looking forward to this year for the Birds.  Feel like it is time to make a big move.

Can’t have that from an adult to a child, regardless your emotions. Especially a coach. Kids have been bouncing to and from schools forever, quitting after a certain year, but all of a sudden it’s easier to find out about. Coaches need to chill out and work with the guys that want to be there.
