I agree he was the best and a great person as well. He and his Bulldogs dominated the 10th region for years and years. Brings back lots of memories to hear his name. I am reminded of Kenny Reeves.Scudder

Walker, Gus Stergoes, Bulldog Ormes, George Cooke and others. I remember the great teams of the 40s and 50s. I remember the Tollesboros with Allan Banes, Flemnig with Clay Evans, Mayslick with Paulie Collins and the Butlers, I remember the team of '48 that won state for the first time with George and Bulldog as eighth graders after beating St. Pats first year team in the District. St. Patas went to Region for first time that year.

I remember the great games between Paris and Maysville in the Region. The one in '52 I believe it was when George Cooke's winning shot at the buzzer was waved off inthe Paris gym. Ah, the good ole days:)

But the game has changed so much and the youth today so athletic and so much better and good Lord that shot jump shots now:)

As I think back as good as Coach Jones was he had an equal or better. Coach John Fields of Fee High School. This man before integration won a national black school championship and regularly produced top flight teams that were not allowed to compete with white schools.I remember Jitter Kings, Gene Buford, Norman Slater, Chris lofton's cousin, and maybe the best to ever play in Mason County except for cousin Chris of course.

Coach Fields was a great, great coach andwonderful teacher. He should have been the head coach when maysville was integrated but was given the assistants job.

I remember Coach Fields. My dad would take me and watch Fee play in the Maysville gym. I loved to watch them play and do remember Gene Bluford and later got to know him and has been my friend ever since. Also got to know Coach Fields and he was such a good example for young people and and a very good person. Also Remember Slater but never got to know him.:thumb:

I forgot about Sparks. The Owls have had some dandy coaches in Bobrowski,Sparks ans Turner over the years.:thumb:

Hazard High has had several great coaches. I would have to say that Roscoe Shackleford was the best. He's in the Kentucky High School Hall of Fame.

Other great ones were Goebal Ritter in the 50's and Roy McKamey in the 80's.

I did not get to see Coach Fields on the sidelines but did have him a as sub once. Thru all of my years of school I remember that one day having him as a sub, so you know how big of an impression he made on me. Just a pleasure to be in his class. Really a classy individual. :thumb:

If you see Gene give him my best. He will know me as Toad Ryan and remind him that I still have a crooked finger from him blocking so many of my shots. Gene and Stan Washington were outstanding athletes, especially in baseball. Should have been in the pros but didnt get a chance. I imagine what you saw in the Maysville gym was one of the championship games as many other games were played in the Fee gym.

John Fields, Professor White and John's brother whose name escapes me (old age;) were outstanding teachers and role models in Maysville.

My wife worked at the nursing home in Maysville as activities director for a year, back around 1990 or 1991, something like that. Mr. Jones was at the nursing home at the time. One of the things she did was to organize a Maysville-Mason County reunion basketball game held at The Fieldhouse, and recognize Coach Jones at halftime. That was a fun night!

Is this the same guy who coached at East Tennessee State? I didn't know he was a Kentucky boy.

Roger Meek took the Patriots to two Sweet Sixteen's. The first was in the school's first year of existence (1974-75) and the second in 1979-80. In my humble opinion, he left coaching too soon to go into administration.

 

He won the 12th Region twice in six years. It has been 26 years since LC won a regional title and not other coach has won one there.

 

You're right about Coach Meek. I didn't see him coach (I wasn't born!), but my parents are both Lincoln County folks and they speak very highly of him. My mother had him in class as well and he speaks to her every time we see him. Just seems like an absolutely wonderful guy.
