Well, based on that, I think I'd pick Coach Wells over Coach Feldhaus. All due respect to what Feldhaus did, he didn't win the big one. How can a coach that had one runner-up team be placed ahead of a coach that won it all?

You could be a great coach without winning the big one. Winning the big one is usually based on a little luck and a lot of talent. Luck could be the best boy from the opposing team getting injured .I've known some excellent coaches that never ever made it to the state tournament. Pick the best coach that you think is in college basketball today and see if they win it all. You will be wrong .

Hard to argue Robin Kelsch at A-Town...resurrecting a program that was winning just one or two games per year when he got there.

But as the old timers say...Joe Mahan was a heckuva coach.

Mike Code is hands down one of the best coaches in the state. The best we've had at Brossart is there right now...

Hard to argue with those choices.

 

I would say that Shawn Johnson at Raceland would make the list. As would Marv Meridith from Russell.

Roger Zornes may make the list on a couple of teams. He had a great run at Ironton.

He was my traffic instuctor for a speeding ticket I got. How about Gary Turner?

 

Philip Wood had several really good teams at PC while Turner only had really two good teams and those came back to back in 84 and 85.

It would be an understatement to say that Wells didnt do a great job while at MC but I feel that a great coach is someone who did the job over a long period of time and you are exactly correct in saying that some of the best coaches this state has ever had never won a state title or even coached in Rupp.

Charlie Turner: Over 200 wins in 11 seasons, 2 regional runner up finishes, and 5 56th district titles.

 

Followed By

Tim Bobrowski 2 56th district titles, and 3 straight All A classic regional titles.

 

Larry Sparks 2 district titles, All A classic state runner-up, his teams lost on last second shots in the 14th region semi's in '91 and '92.

 

*Both Sparks ('90-'92) and Bobrowski ('93-'97) did a good job coaching baseball.

From the first region Allan Hatcher is the best coach Graves County and Marshall County have ever had. He gets it done year in and year out.
