I don’t have a photo but the old Maysville High Gym is rich in history and is one of my favorite gyms.  It has been renovated and is frequently used.  It is officially the Mason County Lady Royals home court and now the home of Mason County’s up and coming wrestling team. It is perfect for both.

Cool place to watch a game, but the band dad in me is not a fan of the acoustics!

Kudos to Mr. Kelley’s book “Legacies of Kentucky Mountain Basketball”, I tried tracking one down and even went to Amazon, but no luck purchasing one.

This thread of Kentucky’s high school historically gyms is awesome.  Even though I’m a Kentucky kid by heart with so many memories of high school  basketball in the bluegrass, I had to live in Indiana for a few years traveling the Hoosier state and like Kentucky, they have some awesome and BIG gyms still standing.  I believe a book was written by someone from the Indianapolis Star in the late 1990’s Earle 2000’s about Indiana’s high school gyms, that’s another book I believe each of you would like to read.  
with that shared, if you all know of anyone else that has written such of a book in Kentucky like Mr. Kelley had done please share.

From the aerial pic, is this it in the upper right corner? My memory of watching a Cov Cath vs. Maysville game there in the '70's is a bit squidgy around the edges. If so, is the bottom photo from this yearbook page the "new" old gym?

Is that the "old" old gym at the bottom right from the aerial view? Would that be the gym in the top pic? 

Came across a Facebook post about Maysville girls basketball. Apparently they were the state champs in 1926,* so there's some championship history, girls and boys, being played on that block.

* KHSAA sanctioned? The title isn't in the "Record Book." I'm fascinated by this bit of history. I'm a big fan of the girls game.

No pictures.  The old Lexington Dunbar gym, 1923/1967.  The school was turned into a community center, still operates today.  The gym is still in great shape.  Was there a couple weeks ago to watch the new Dunbar play Louisville Central.  Well worth the trip.

Below are a few pictures from Jared Peck at the Lexington Herald-Leader from the Dunbar/Central game played at Old Dunbar a few weeks ago.

In Pendleton County, the old Morgan, Butler, and Falmouth schools and gyms are still standing.   Butler has been converted to an apartment building.  Not sure about the gym.  Falmouth and Morgan are standing, but not in good shape.  Historical note.  Coach Hall met his wife at Morgan HS.  She was a teacher there, and he was there as a rep for the Heinz Company. 

In Campbell County, the original gym is still in use at the current CC Middle School.  It is on the far north end of the complex.  I think it was built in the 1930s. 

In Northwest Bourbon County, on Russell Cave Road just north of Centerville, there is an old school and gym in very bad shape.

Join us Tuesday night as the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame designates "The Briar Patch" as one of its Glory Road historic gymnasiums.

Tonight we will be hosting a unique event as our high school gym will be designated a Glory Road site by the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame. 1972 Olympic Basketball team Captain Kenny Davis will be on hand to represent the HOF and present the marker.

We will have a special extended pregame ceremony followed by a throwback game in which the Wayne Co. Cardinals will be wearing their Monticello Trojan uniforms in honor of the first game in Somerset Basketball history played on Nov. 22 1907 resulting in a 29-23 Somerset victory.

Some places can take you back in time, historic venues like Wrigley Field, Madison Square Garden, and Fenway Park are magical portals that transport spectators back to a day when life was simpler and the local sports team was the greatest show around. Nestled in southeastern Kentucky is a high school gym that takes its fans back in time to remember the great moments of the past while continuing to make new memories for its patrons. 

The Somerset High School Gymnasium opened in 1937 at a cost of $90,000; seating 1700 spectators, it was, at the time of its opening, the largest high school gym in the 12th region. Affectionately known as “The Briar Patch” it has hosted the 12th region tournament a record 21 times including 16 consecutive years from 1948 until 1963 and the district tournament an amazing 44 times, which includes a consecutive streak of 35 years from 1938 until 1973. Having been updated and refurbished several times throughout the decades, the gym has all the amenities of a modern gym while maintaining that nostalgic old-school feel. Some of the most notable basketball players in Kentucky high school history have passed through “The Patch.” State Champions, Mr. and Ms. Basketballs, NBA Champions, and Olympic Champions have all displayed their talents in this historic gym beside Lake Cumberland.

Eminence should be one of the older gyms in the 8th region. Mostly used for Jr. High events now I believe.

Yeah, their high school teams now play in the astonishing new facility they built. I believe they used it for like jr league and middle school tournaments and such, but would love to see a retro night!

I enjoyed the old Eminence gym, but their new gym across the street is really, really nice.

❓❗ Original Maysville Gym mystery solved. The first gym was on the top floor of the school, later converted into classrooms. Ahh... and the letterman's sweaters. <chef's kiss>
